Walk-off errors, multi-homer games, three-hit shutouts: MLB's 10 best Father's Day games of the past decade

MLB's 10 best Father's Day games of the past decade

They say that baseball is the language of fathers and sons and that is never more evident than on Father's Day when matinees and promotional giveaways mark the holiday across MLB. While any Father's Day is special -- particularly those filled with America's pastime -- every year there's at least one specific instance that seems to steal the show.

We scoured the boxscores so that we could highlight the most exciting Father's Day games of the last decade. Walk-offs, multi-homer games and pitchers tossing gems proved to be the best gift a father could receive. You know, not counting the undying love of his children, of course.

June 19, 2005 - Polanco walks off for Tigers - Just 11 days after coming over in a trade from the Phillies, Placido Polanco started earning his keep for the Tigers. With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Polanco cranked one of his nine homers that season over the left-center field fence.

June 18, 2006 - Mr. Walk-Off hits a walk-off - Over the course of his 11-year career, Ryan Zimmerman has built a reputation for himself as a clutch hitter, so much so that his nickname is Mr. Walk-Off.

June 17, 2007 - Everybody hits for the Pads - The '07 Padres weren't exactly known for their offensive prowess as they finished 15th in the NL with a .251 team batting average that season. But on Father's Day of that season, their three, four, five hitters went a combined 9-for-13 with four home runs and 10 RBIs

June 15, 2008 - Whoops times two - The Cardinals and Phillies were sitting pretty at 41-28 and 40-30 respectively heading into Father's Day in '08. Tied at six, the teams offered fans some free baseball that day, but the Phils allowed an error-single-error sequence to give the game to the Cards with two outs in the bottom of the 10th.

June 21, 2009 - Green graduates from walk-on to walk-off - Nick Green was just excited to be in the Red Sox dugout in '09 when he ended up starting 81 games at shortstop. On Father's Day, he sneaked a walk-off dinger just inside the right-field foul pole to give his Sox the wins.

June 20, 2010 - Matt Holliday runs into his ex ... homers twice - Holliday played exactly 93 games for the Athletics before they traded him to the Cardinals in 2009. On Father's Day in 2010, he went 3-for-4 with two dingers against his former team, but the A's got the last laugh with a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals.

June 19, 2011 - Vargas throws a gem for Mariners - A Phillies team that would go on to win 102 games could only muster three hits off Jason Vargas, who struck out six over nine scoreless innings in a 2-0 Mariners.

June 17, 2012 - Span walk-off lifts Twins in 15 - The Brewers and Twins played a 15-inning marathon on Father's Day in 2012. The game featured 35 hits and 13 pitchers. In the bottom of the 15th, Twins second baseman James Carroll appeared to hit a walk-off single, but Nori Aoki threw Trevor Plouffe out at home with some help from a pickle involving his catcher and third baseman. The next batter -- Denard Span -- capped off a 4-for-8 night with an actual walk-off single. Twins won 5-4 in 15.

June 16, 2013 - It ain't over 'til Nieuwenhuis sings - Starlin Castro and Nate Schierholtz both scored on Mets throwing errors to give the Cubbies a 3-0 lead. But it's not over 'til it's over and Kirk Nieuwenhuis decided it was over when he belted a walk-off three-run homer to right field to cap-off the four-run ninth. His only hit of the day gave the Mets the 4-3 win.

June 15, 2014 - Pirates pick the wrong poison - With a man in scoring position and one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, the Pirates intentionally walked Giancarlo Stanton to get to eventual Comeback Player of the Year, Casey McGehee. Before McGehee even had to take the bat off his shoulder, a wild pitch moved Ed Lucas to third. McGehee capped a 3-for-4 day with a fly ball that scored Lucas on a walk-off sacrifice fly. Marlins won 3-2.
