John Joseph McDonald...Graduated East Lyme High School (CT) in 1992...Named to all-state team as a senior. Played collegiately at University of Connecticut at Avery Point from 1993-94 and Providence College from 1995-96...Named New England Junior College Player of the Year in 1994...Also a second-team Junior College All-American...Originally drafted by Cleveland in the 12th round of the 1996 amateur draft...Has been traded to the Blue Jays on two occasions (2004 & 2005) and has been dealt four times overall...Has appeared with seven different MLB teams (Clev, Det, Tor, AZ, Pit, Phi, Bos) across 15 seasons.
2012
Appeared in 70 games in his first full season with the D-backs, hitting .249 (49-for-197) with 6 home runs and 22 RBI...6 home runs tied his career high (also 2010)...Played in 54 games at shortstop, 5 at third base and 4 at second...combined to post a .996 (1 E in 469 TC) fielding percentage...Received 5 intentional walks after going 12 Major League seasons without any...Received first career intentional walk in 891st game on April 22 vs. Braves...Collected his 100th career double on June 20 vs. Seattle...On the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique from July 2-23 (retro to June 25).

Played in 63 games this season with 40 starts (15 at 2B, 12 at SS, 11 at 3B, 2 at LF)... STRONG SEASON: Despite playing in his fewest games in a season since 2001 with CLE, set career highs with six home runs and a .454 slugging percentage... Was the second consecutive season he set a new career high in home runs... 17 of his 38 hits went for extra bases (nine doubles, two triples, six home runs)... Batted .310 with runners in scoring position (9-29), with two doubles, one triple and one home run... From July 21-Aug. 21 hit safely in seven consecutive games... FATHER'S DAY: In his first at-bat on June 20 vs. SF after being activated from the bereavment list (June 16) following the passing of his father hit a home run on Father's Day... SOLID MONTH: Hit .382 (13-34) in August with two doubles, one triple, three home runs and six runs batted in... GLOVE WORK: In 23 games this season at 2B committed only one error for a .988 fielding percentage and in 19 games at shortstop committed one error for a .985 fielding percentage.
2009
Appeared in 73 games, making 35 starts; 19 at SS, nine at 3B, five at 2B & two in LF... POWER SURGE: Hit four homeruns in his 151 at-bats, representing a career high... His three-run home run on Sept. 8 vs. MIN marked the 1st one of his career (has one grand slam)... His slugging percentage of .384 established a new career high, and his .258 average is his highest mark since 2005... BIG FINISH: Collected hits in 11 of his final 13 games, batting .306 with a double, two home runs and six RBI over that span... Made 32 of his 35 starts after June... Appeared in 28 games from April to June, however, 25 were as a pinch runner or defensive replacement... IN THE FIELD: Committed one error at shortstop in his 19 games, for a .990 fielding percentage.
2008
In 84 games this season, batted .210 with one home run & 18 RBI... Began the season, recording just four hits & one RBI in his first 20 games (.148, 4-27)...GOING ON THE OFFENSIVE: On July 22 at BAL set a season high four RBI, going 1-for-3 with a 3-run double... Hit his only home run of the season on July 27 vs. SEA (off Washburn)... From Aug. 7-22 batted .306 (15-49) with five doubles & seven RBI in a 14 game span... WALK IT OFF: On Sept. 3 vs. MIN hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th inning off Eddie Guardado to lead the Jays to a 5-4 victory... IN THE FIELD: Made 54 starts this season (52 at SS & 2 at 3B), with the Jays going 32-22 in those contests... In 67 games at short stop, owned a .960 fielding % after committing nine errors in 223 total chances... ON THE SHELF: Was placed on the 15-day DL on May 7 after leaving the game the night before with a sprained right ankle... Appeared in three games with the Dunedin Blue Jays (A) in a rehab assignment, going 4-for-11... Was activated from the disabled list on June 7.

Set a new career high with a 10-game hit streak from April 12-29, going 15-32 (.469) over that span...Batted .329 (28-85) vs. left-handers...Hit .415 (17-41) in 16 April contests...Went the first 34 games without committing an error...Made his 1st error of the season on May 29 vs. NYY...Went 34 games from July 29-Sept. 7 without committing an error...CAREER BEST: Established new careers highs in games played (123), hits (82), doubles (20) and RBI (31)...Owned a .982 fielding percentage & assisted in 66 of the Club's 160 double plays this season... Made 102 starts, 94 at SS and eight at 3B...As the shortstop made a career high 94 starts, played in a career high 799.1 innings and had a career best .982 fielding percentage... QUITE THE HONOUR: Was the recipient of the "John Cerutti" Award, a selection made by the Toronto Chapter of the BBWAA...This award is given annually to the person associated with day-to-day workings of Blue Jays baseball who displays goodwill, cooperation and character as exemplified by the late John Cerutti.

On July 25 at SEA, hit his 1st grand slam of his career, surpassing his previous best of two RBI in a game with five...Committed 14 errors to tie for the team lead, posting a .963 fielding pct...Set career highs in walks (16) and home runs (3)...Tied a career high with 35 runs scored and triples with three.
2005
Batted .277 with 16 RBI in 68 games (37 with Toronto, 31 with Detroit)... Was traded to the Detroit Tigers on July 22...August 15 vs. BOS, he delivered a run-scoring single in the bottom of the ninth inning off Curt Schilling to give the Tigers a walk-off victory... Matched his season high with three hits on August 17 vs. BOS...For the season, he posted a .969 fielding percentage committing just eight errors in 264 chances.
2004
Played sparingly, serving as the Indians utility infielder and back-up shortstop to Omar Vizquel in his 3rd full season in the big leagues... Made 20 starts for the Tribe and Eric Wedge (15GS at SS, 4GS at 2B, 1GS at 3B) as the Indians were 13-7 (.650) in his starting assignments...Hit his first home run and the third of his career on July 19 at Anaheim (off Sele).
2003
Spring training knee injury marred his entire season and forced him onto the disabled list on two separate occasions and ended his season in August... Left knee problems started in spring training, forcing him to miss five games from March 10-14 and persisted the entire season... Played thru the injury for most of the first three months of the season before going on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain... Was activated from the DL on July 17 after a short rehab to Mahoning Valley & Lake County to open the 2nd half on the active roster... Continued to play thru knee and back pain before playing his last game on August 26 and went on the DL the following day for the remainder of the season...Hit his 2nd career HR and only HR of 2003 on May 7 at ANA off John Lackey... Underwent surgery on his left knee on Sept. 5 in Vail, CO by Dr. Richard Steadman... Steadman performed a "micro-fracture" procedure to promote the flow of blood & cartilage growth.
2002
Enjoyed his first full season in the big leagues as the Indians utility infielder and spent much of the season's last two months as the Tribe's regular second baseman...Began the season on the active roster despite undergoing an emergency appendectomy in Winter Haven, FL on February 27... Hit his first major league homer on September 5 at Chicago-AL off Jim Parque.
2001
Was on Cleveland's opening day roster, appearing in two games at third base before being optioned to AAA Buffalo on April 8... Was bothered by a sore left wrist for much of the season at Buffalo, but rallied to hit .309 (34-110) over the last 31 games of the season with a HR & nine RBI from July 30 through the end of the season before his second recall on September 1... Was recalled for a second time on September 1 when rosters were expanded to 40.
2000
Was on the disabled list at Buffalo for eight weeks over two different stints from April 27 to June 27 with a torn muscle in his left quadriceps... Appeared in five games for A Mahoning Valley of the New York-Penn League on a rehab assignment, June 20-27... Spent two separate stints with Cleveland from Aug. 24-31 (Chan Perry optioned) and from September 4 thru the remainder of the regular season after the roster expanded to 40... Was optioned to A Kinston on August 31 in order to make Russ Branyan playoff-eligible and appeared in one game for Kinston on September 3 before being recalled to Cleveland the next day when the Carolina League season ended.
1999
Split the season between Akron (AA) & Buffalo (AAA) and got his first taste of the big leagues in the process...Started the year at Akron and hit .296 (67-226) in 55 games with the Aeros before being promoted to Buffalo on June7... Appeared in 24 games with the Bisons before being recalled to Cleveland on July 4 after Travis Fryman tore a ligament in his right knee... John made his major league debut that day (July 4 vs. KC) and notched his first big league hit, a single off Kansas City's Scott Service... Appeared in 10 games in July for the Indians before being optioned back to Buffalo on July 23 when Russell Branyan was recalled... Was recalled for the second time after the conclusion of Buffalo's season on September 10... Played winter ball in Puerto Rico for San Juan after the season... Was shutdown for two weeks in late November with a jammed right shoulder.
1998
Earned himself a spot in the Double A All-Star Game on July 8 in New Haven, CT... Was 2nd on the Akron club in games played (132) and at bats (514)... Led Eastern League shortstops in total chances (672) and putouts (242) and was second with a .966 fielding percentage (672TC, 23E, 91DP)... Was added to the 40-man roster on November 19 when his contract was purchased from AA Akron... Hit .286 (42-147) with 4 2B, 1 HR & 12 RBI in 36 games (4SB) in the Arizona Fall League after Akron's season with the Phoenix Desert Dogs.
1997
Second year pro enjoyed a solid season at Kinston (A) where he represented the Indians on the Carolina League Post-Season All-Star team.
1996
Tribe's 12th round selection out of Providence spent the '96 campaign at Watertown...Only member of the club to appear in all 75 games...Led the Indians in hits, runs scored, and sacrifices...His 11 doubles placed second on the club.
