Garrett Andrew Olson graduated from Buchanan High School in Clovis, CA...Attended Cal Poly and majored in mechanical engineering...Earned first-team All-American honors for the Anchorage Bucs in the Alaskan Summer League in 2004 (7-0, 0.88).
2011
Was a member of the Pirates' Opening Day roster...Spent the majority of the year with Indianapolis (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League...Designated for Assignment on April 15 and outrighted to Indianapolis on April 20, where he spent the remainder of the season...At Triple-A he was on the Disabled List from May 15-June 7 with an oblique strain and from August 13-August 22 with a left groin strain...Was 3-1 with a 2.92 ERA in 15 starts for Indianapolis...In 71.0 innings, he allowed 46 hits, 25 runs, 23 earned, with 35 walks and 52 strikeouts...Opponents hit .189 against him as a starter (46-244)...Out of the bullpen, went 1-2 with a 3.68 ERA in nine contests at Triple-A...In 14.2 innings, he allowed 17 hits, 10 runs, six earned, with 12 walks and nine strikeouts...Made 14 straight starts from May 14-August 12...Lefthanded batters hit .188 (16-85) against him while righthanders compiled a .216 (47-218) average against him...In 10 starts in June and July, he went 3-0 with a 2.44 ERA (14 earned runs/51.2 innings), and permitted 27 hits with 26 walks and 36 strikeouts.

Part of two trades during the off season...acquired by the Chicago Cubs for Felix Pie (of) on Jan. 18, 2009...traded to Seattle a week later along with Ronny Cedeno (inf) in exchange for Aaron Heilman (rhp) on Jan. 28, 2009...Began the year with Norfolk (AAA)...went 1-1 with a 1.85 ERA (5 ER, 24.1 IP) in 5 April starts...also spent time at Norfolk in August (0-1, 5.25, 2 GS)...Recalled to Baltimore on April 29...Went 9-10 with a 6.65 ERA (98 ER, 132.2 IP) in 26 starts for the Orioles...Ranked 4th among American League rookies in starts (26), 5th in wins (9) and innings pitched (132.2), and 6th in strikeouts (83)...Started the season going 5-1 with a 3.86 ERA (19 ER, 44.1 IP) through his first 8 starts...allowed 3 ER or fewer in of those 8 starts...Pitched a career-best 8.1 innings, allowing 3 ER on 11 hits Aug. 1 at Seattle.

Made 7 starts for the O's after going 9-7 with a 3.16 ERA in 22 starts for AAA Norfolk...Ranked 3rd in the International League in ERA and led the league with 128 strikeouts when he joined the Orioles...Turned in a team-high 14 "Quality Starts" in his 22 outings for the Tides...Ranked 4th in the IL with a 1.80 ERA in 6 starts in June and was tied for 4th in the league with 4 wins in the month...Minor league batters hit .208 off him, and he held lefties to a .179 (20-112) mark...Began the year 0-4 with a 4.28 ERA, but went 9-3 with a 2.66 ERA over his last 15 starts with the Tides starting May 14...Recorded 10 strikeouts in a game three times, the only Tide to reach double figures in K's in a game this year...Was selected to play in the All-Star Futures game in San Francisco on July 8 but did not participate after joining the Orioles four days earlier...Contract was selected from AAA Norfolk on July 4 and he made his major league debut at Chicago that night...Pitched 4.1 innings, allowing 2 ER, and did not receive a decision in the Orioles' 9-6 win over the White Sox...Earned his first major league victory in his next start on July 15 against the Sox, allowing 2 runs in 5.0 innings...Was optioned to Norfolk on July 19 when Steve Trachsel was activated from the disabled list...Was optioned to Rookie-level Bluefield on August 24 so he could be recalled at the end of the Appalachian League season on August 29...Did not appear in a game for Bluefield...Rejoined the Orioles and made two starts against Boston in September...Took the loss on September 6 vs. the Red Sox, allowing 5 runs in 3.2 innings...Was shut down for the remainder of the year after his September 6 outing due to left forearm tightness.

Spent most of the season at Class A Aberdeen and was named the 8th best prospect in the New York-Penn League...Allowed one run or less in 10 of his 11 games with the IronBirds...Made his first 5 appearances in relief, allowing one run in 10.0 innings while striking out 15...Pitched 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out 8 in his last start on 8/15 at Staten Island...Was transferred to Class A Frederick on 8/20 and made 3 regular season starts for the Keys, holding opponents to a .192 average...Struck out a season-high 10 batters in 5.1 innings on 9/1 vs. Lynchburg...Went 1-0 and did not allow a run in 10.0 innings in 3 games in the Carolina League playoffs as the Keys won the championship...
