John Victor Leathersich...Is a 2008 graduate of Beverly (MA) High School, where he was the school's alltime leader in strikeouts and wins...Attended UMass-Lowell, where he went 6-2 with a 1.62 ERA and 126 strikeouts and 12.74 strikeouts per 9.0ip as a junior in 2011; the strikeouts and strikeouts/per 9.0ip were both single-season school records...Was named the best pro prospect in the 2009 Summer Valley League...Pitched for Orleans in the Cape Cod League in 2010.

2017

Spent majority of season with Iowa (Cubs' AAA)...Allowed seven of his 14 earned runs with Iowa in four appearances in April...Recorded a 1.52 ERA (41.1ip/7er) in 21 outings from 5/1 thru the end of the regular season... Lost each of his first three decisions before earning his first win on 7/30 at Albuquerque...Was recalled by Chicago on 7/4 and made his only appearance with the Cubs on 7/6 vs. Milwaukee (0.2ip/2er)...Was optioned to Iowa for the remainder of the season on 7/6...Earned his only save on 8/14 at Omaha...Was scored upon just once in his final 18 appearances after allowing three unearned runs on 8/15... Posted a 0.55 ERA (32.2ip/2er) and 56 strikeouts in his final 29 games with Iowa, dating back to the start of June...Was claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh on 9/4 and assigned to Indianapolis for the International League playoffs...Went 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA (2.0ip/2er) in three postseason games; suffered the loss in Game Four against Durham on 9/9 (elimination game)...Was recalled by Pittsburgh on 9/10 and made his debut with the Pirates on 9/12 at Milwaukee (1.0ip/0r)...Was not charged with a run in his six appearances with the Pirates and held left-handed batters hitless in six at bats. 2016

Went 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA (5 ER/23.1 IP) in 26 games (one start) between Rookie League Mesa, Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa ... began the season on the disabled list recovering from Tommy John surgery ... made his season debut, June 22, as part of a rehab stint. © Was activated from the disabled list, July 22, and assigned to Double-A Tennessee where he posted a 3.48 ERA (4 ER/10.1 IP) in 11 relief appearances ... promoted to Triple-A Iowa, August 22, and allowed no hits and just one unearned run in five relief outings (5.0 IP) ... Selected to the Cubs 40-man roster, November 18.

2015

Made his major league debut after being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on April 29 … posted a 2.31 ERA (3 ER/11.2 IP) with 14 strikeouts in 17 relief appearances for the Mets before undergoing Tommy John surgery in July … Tossed 0.1-scoreless innings of relief in his debut, April 29 at the Marlins … Struck out a career-high three hitters in 1.2-scoreless innings of relief on May 20 … Did not allow a run in his first 10 big league outings, spanning 8.1 innings (nine strikeouts) … Made his final appearance of the season, June 29 with Las Vegas, then was shut down ... underwent surgery a month later on July 29 … Began the season at Triple-A Las Vegas, posting no record with a 5.40 ERA (8 ER/13.1 IP) and 22 strikeouts in 13 games … Claimed off waivers by the Cubs November 19 and declared a free agent December 2 … Signed a one-year minor league contract with the Cubs December 15.

Began the year with Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League...Promoted to Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League on August 5...For the year, he struck out 93 batters in 54.1 innings (15.4 per nine innings)...For his minor league career, he has struck out 334 batters in 197.1 innings (15.2 batters per nine innings)...Fanned 79 in 46.0 innings pitched at Binghamton and 14 in 8.1 innings pitched at Las Vegas...In the Eastern League, righthanded batters hit .200 (21-105) against him...Struck out five of the seven batters he faced against New Britain on May 25...Fanned at least one batter in 42 of his 48 appearances at Binghamton and Las Vegas...Lefthanded batters hit .167 (3-18) against him at Triple-A.

2013

Has 241 strikeouts in 143.0 innings (15.17 strikeouts per nine innings) during his minor league career... Went 2-0 with a 1.53 ERA (five earned runs/29.1 innings) and 55 strikeouts in 24 games with Binghamton (AA) of the Eastern League before he was promoted to Las Vegas (AAA) of the Pacific Coast League on June 12... Finished with 102 strikeouts in 58.1 innings... Went 2-0 with 47 strikeouts in 29.0 innings at Las Vegas…Posted a 7.76 ERA (25 earned runs) with the 51s.
