Carlos Jesus Garcia
Carlos Garcia joined the Pittsburgh coaching staff on October 30, 2009. In addition to his duties as First Base Coach, he will serve the Major League club as its Infield Instructor. Garcia spent the last two seasons as Pittsburgh's minor league Infield Coordinator; spending part of the final month of the 2009 season with the big league team in Pittsburgh. He also managed Navegantes del Magallanes in Venezuela this past off season. His club posted a 41-22 regular season record and advanced to the Championship Series, but lost, four games to three, to Caracas. Prior to returning to the Pirates in 2008, Carlos spent the previous three years (2005-07) as Seattle's Third Base Coach and Major League Infield Instructor. Under his supervision, the Mariners led the American League in fielding percentage in 2005 and finished among the top five in 2006 and 2007. Garcia served the Cleveland Indians organization as its hitting and infield coach with Triple-A Buffalo in 2003-04 after spending the 2002 campaign as a player-coach with the club. A former infielder, Garcia spent parts of 13 seasons in the Major Leagues with Pittsburgh (1990-96), Toronto (1997), Anaheim (1998) and San Diego (1999). He made his Major League debut with the Pirates on 9/20/90 and singled as a pinch hitter off Bill Long at Wrigley Field in his first big league plate appearance that afternoon. Carlos made one appearance during the 1992 N.L.C.S. against Atlanta and hit a career-high 12 home runs with the Bucs in 1993; his first career homer was an inside-the-park job off Orel Hershiser at Dodger Stadium on 4/16/93. One of the highlights of Garcia's career was being named to National League All-Star team while playing for the Pirates in 1994. The game was played at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh and Carlos received a warm reception from the fans during pre game introductions that night (he entered the game in the 4th inning at second base and went 1-for-2 at the plate). Among his other highlights were a 21-game hitting streak in 1995 and hitting the 8,000th home run in Pittsburgh Pirates history on 4/13/96. Garcia was traded to Toronto as part of a nine-player deal on 11/15/96 and appeared in 103 games with the Blue Jays in 1997. He spent the 1998 season between Anaheim and Triple-A Vancouver and played most of the '99 campaign with Las Vegas (Padres' AAA). Carlos compiled a .266 batting average (580-for-2178), 33 home runs, 197 RBI and 73 stolen bases in 610 big league games, playing in his last Major League game with San Diego on 4/15/99. **Personal** Carlos Jesus Garcia...Wife's name is Cathy...Has three children; son Carlos Jr. (9/5/95) and twins Isabel and Emanuel 10/8/01)...Graduate of Bolivar High School in Venezuela where he played baseball...Originally signed by Pittsburgh as a non-drafted free agent at the age of 19 on 1/9/87...Wore uniform #13 with the Pirates and Blue Jays as a tribute to former Reds shortstop and Venezuelan native Dave Concepcion, who was Cincinnati's shortstop for 19 years (1970-1988).
