David Matthew (Dave) Newhan attended Cypress Junior College (Calif.) in 1992 and Georgia Tech in 1993...Graduated from Pepperdine University where he hit .313 with 15 home runs and 71 RBI in 103 career games in 1994 and 1995...Was an All-West Coast Conference selection following his senior year...Drafted by Detroit in 1992, but did not sign...David's father, Ross Newhan, was a baseball writer for the *Los Angeles Times* and is a member of the writer's wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame as a winner of the J.G. Taylor Spinx Award.

2007

Recalled from New Orleans for a fourth time on September 16th...Also was with the Mets from July 29th-August 14th, July 5th- July 19th and from the start of the year until June 8th...Became the 137th third baseman in club history on September 29th vs. Florida...Also made one start at second base and appeared in eight games (seven starts) in leftfield...Began the year with the Mets and batted .200 (10-50) with one double, one home run and four RBI in 41 games before he was optioned to New Orleans (AAA) on June 8th...Registered his second career pinch-hit home run on May 12th vs. Milwaukee (off Ben Sheets)...Pinch-hit and registered a single in his first at-bat with New York on April 1st at St. Louis...Hit .347 (60-173) with 27 runs scored, 12 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 30 RBI in 44 games for the Zephyrs...Batted .383 (18-47) in July for the Zephyrs...Hit in 22 straight games with New Orleans from June 23rd-August 21st...Had at least one hit in 38 of the 42 games he had an at-bat with New Orleans.

2006

Missed most of the year with a fractured right fibula which limited his season to 39 games...Suffered the injury to his fibula while stealing second base in the first inning on April 17th vs. the Los Angeles Angels...Was placed on the Disabled List the next day and had surgery on April 20 at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore...Played in six games with Bowie (AA) of the Eastern League on a Major League Rehabilitation assignment before he was activated by the Orioles on Aug. 29...Performed in 29 of Baltimore's final 32 games after coming off the Disabled List...Started 15 straight games in center field after Aug. 29 in place of the injured Corey Patterson...Hit safely in 17 of the 29 games after his return...Collected six multiple-hit contests, including a season-high three hits on Sept. 1 at Oakland.

2005

Newhan struggled in his role as a utility man and had two separate stints with the Orioles after going down to Triple-A Ottawa. Newhan's best game was May 30 at Boston when he hit a grand slam and drove in five runs.

2004

Spent the first two months of the season at AAA Oklahoma before signing with the Orioles as a free agent on June 18...Hit safely in 71 of 95 games with the Birds. Played in 95 of the final 100 games after joining the Orioles...Made 32 starts as a designated hitter, played 24 games in right field, 19 games in left field, 17 games at third base and 2 games at first base. Hit safely in his first 15 games, the longest hitting streak of his career...Hit safely in 31 of his first 33 games with the O's, batting .413. Hit a 435-foot pinch-hit home run in his first at-bat on June 18 at Colorado, becoming one of 19 players homer in their first game for the Orioles and one of 5 to do it in his first at-bat...Also in '04, Javy Lopez homered in his first at-bat and Chad Mottola homered in his first game with the Orioles. Despite playing in just 95 games, was 2nd in the American League with five 4-hit games, all coming within his first 53 games...Was one short of the club record of six 4-hit games in a season, held by Cal Ripken (1983) and Roberto Alomar (1996). Had 4 hits, including an inside-the-park home run off Pedro Martinez, on July 21 at Boston...It was the first inside-the-park homer by an Oriole since Phil Bradley did it on June 8, 1990. Tied for 7th in the American League with 7 triples, the most by an Oriole since Mike Bordick also had triples in 1999. Hit a career-high 8 home runs, including 4 in his first 12 games. Had 31 multi-hit games, including 4 straight starts, July 9-15...Hit safely in 9 straight games, July 5-17, batting .455 (15-33). Average decreased each month of the season...Hit .233 over his final 34 games to drop his average from .354 to a season-ending .311. Began the season at Oklahoma City in the Texas organization...Was batting .286 through May 9, but hit .360 (54-150) with 8 home runs in his next 35 games before joining the Orioles.
