**COACHING CAREER** Gary Thurman enters his first season with the Marlins. He takes over the role of first base, outfield and base-running coach after spending the last four seasons as the outfield and base-running coordinator in Cleveland's player development system. This will be his 14th season overall as a manager, coach or instructor in professional baseball ... Prior to his time in Cleveland, Thurman spent nine seasons as a coach or manager in the Seattle organization. He spent his final season with the Mariners at the Major League level in 2007, serving as the Club's Outfield and Base-running Coordinator, as well as the team's first base coach ... The rest of his time with Seattle was spent as a successful manager and coach in the minor league system. In five seasons as a manager at two differnet levels (rookie and single-A) he compiled a 319-290 record (.524), winning a California League title with single-A Inland Empire in 2006 and qualifying for the Midwest League playoffs with single-A Wisconsin in 2001. He also served as a coach for triple-A Tacoma in 2003, and for double-A San Antonio from 2004-2005. **PLAYING CAREER** Thurman was selected in the first round (21st overall) of the 1983 draft by the Kansas City Royals ... He played 16 seasons, including nine in the Major Leagues. He saw time in the big leagues with the Royals (1987-92), Detroit (1993), Seattle (1995) and the Mets (1997). He was also in the Chicago-AL, Montreal and Anaheim organizations during his playing career ... In 1,295 career minor league games, he batted .276 with 48 home runs, 480 RBI and 437 stolen bases. **PERSONAL/MISCELLANEOUS** Thurman and his wife, Nailet, have four children: Andrew, Brytoney, Ricardo and Taylor.
