Juan Luis Sosa
2000
Juan Sosa entered his eighth professional campaign, his third with the Rockies organization...Juan spent most of the '99 season at Double-A, although he did make a late-season stop in Colorado Springs (AAA) and his Major League debut...regarded as one of the fastest in the Rockies system, Sosa stands only 34 steals away from the 200th of his pro career...since 1998, from Single-A through Triple-A, he's swiped 103 bases in 134 attempts (77 percent)...during that '98 campaign at Salem (A), Juan's 64 bags led the organization, the Carolina League and tied for fifth across all of minor league ball...his 12 triples in '98 led the league, organization and tied for sixth in the minors...last season, his 39 steals were second in the Colorado chain to Juan Pierre (66)...in each of his last two seasons, he's produced eight homers and 47 RBI...Sosa, who entered his second spring on the roster in Major League camp, could get more time at Triple-A, where he spent a memorable week to close the '99 season...if he can get his on-base percentage up, and develop more patience at the plate, he could turn into a strong leadoff man...he's spent most of his career as a shortstop, but does have experience in the outfield...the Rockies may choose to develop him as an outfielder, but that's only one of the questions in camp this spring.
1999
Sosa made his debut at three levels: Double-A, Triple-A and the Majors...he combined at his three stops-Carolina (AA), Colorado Springs (AAA) and the Rockies-to bat .281 (148-for-526) with eight homers and 47 RBI...he made his Double-A debut to open the season, and batted mostly at the top of the lineup, including 47 at-bats in the leadoff spot, where he hit .300 with four homers...he struggled somewhat over the first half...entering the Southern League All-Star break, he went 0-for-his-last-17...but Juan put together a solid second-half, finished tied for third in the league with 38 steals, and closed on a strong note with multiple promotions, to Triple-A and the Majors...on Sept. 1, the Rockies recalled Chris Sexton and moved Sosa from Carolina to Colorado Springs...in a 10-day Triple-A debut, Juan batted .393 (11-for-28) with a double, triple, homer and stolen base...he spent most of the Sky Sox stint in the outfield (four starts), while starting twice at short...then, on Sept. 10, the Rockies brought him to Denver...Sosa made his major league debut that night at Coors Field, a pinch-hit strikeout...one week later, vs. his former Los Angeles organization Sept. 17, he delivered his first major league hit, a pinch single off Robinson Checo...Juan's only start came Sept. 28 at Arizona; he went 0-for-3 with a walk...he picked up his second pinch-base hit, Oct. 1 vs. San Francisco...overall he went 2-for-4 in the pinch and played shortstop, left and center fields.
1998
Sosa had an All-Star year in his first season in the Rockies organization...he led the Carolina League and the Colorado organization in triples (12) and steals (64)...he also topped his team and finished third in the loop in both runs scored (88) and hits (147)...Salem's everyday shortstop, he actually earned postseason All-Star honors as a utility infielder...Juan led league shortstops in games (122), total chances (555), and putouts (196)...he stole two bases April 27 vs. Danville, his first of 12 multi-steal games during the year...he also had a pair of three-steal games in August and totaled 20 steals in 29 games during the month...he stole five bases in his final four contests.
1997
In his fifth and final season in the Dodger organization he played the full season at Vero Beach (A), splitting time at both middle infield spots.
1996
Sosa played 112 games at Savannah (A) of the South Atlantic League and saw time at second, third, shortstop and the outfield.
1995
Juan started the year at Vero Beach but was moved to Yakima (A) of the Northwest League early in the season.
1994
During his second season with the Dodgers' Santo Domingo club in the Dominican League, he hit a career high .290.
1993
As a 17-year-old infielder, he debuted at Santo Domingo in the Dominican League.
