Rene Reyes ... lettered in baseball and basketball at Nueva Esparta High School and was the team home run champion his senior year ... signed by Jorge de Posada.
2003
Colorado's Triple-A MVP, Reyes led the farm system with a .343 average (127-for-370) en route to earning his first big league promotion in late July...finished runner-up to Fresno's Brian Dallimore for the Pacific Coast League batting title and despite playing in only 98 games, was still named to the All-PCL Team at season's end...opened the year by batting .307 in April but exploded in May, hitting safely in 26-of-30 games for a .390 average (48-for-123), 11 doubles, 22 runs and 19 RBI to win him organizational "Player of the Month" honors...thanks to a league-leading 117 hits, Reyes was selected to represent the World Team at the All-Star Futures Game in Chicago on July 13...went hitless in the contest at U.S. Cellular Field in 3 atbats...he then traveled to Memphis three days later for the Triple A All-Star Game on July 16, belting a 2-run homer for the PCL in a 13-9 losing effort vs. the International League...proved to be a very versatile performer for Colorado Springs, playing in at least 30 games in all three outfield positions, 38 in LF, 31 in CF and 31 in RF...had three different hitting streaks over 10 games and even had a team-high 18-game road hitting streak from May 11 to June 14 (.418, 28-for-67)...recalled by the Rockies July 22, Rene made his major league debut that evening in Los Angeles, going 1-for-4 as the starting rightfielder...his first ML hit, a fourth-inning single off Dodger starter Hideo Nomo...followed his debut with a 3-for-5 effort the next night (July 23 vs. LA) and would go on to hit in each of his first four outings (6-for-14)...for the year, the Venezuelan native played in 53 games and batted a .259 (30-for-116) with 7 doubles, a triple, 2 homers and 7 RBI...the switch-hitter was .45 points better from the right side (.289) than the left (.244), but had one home run from both sides of the plate...his first career clout came Aug. 10 vs. Pittsburgh in the second inning off Nelson Figueroa...then hit a 2-run shot off San Diego's Kevin Walker in the eighth inning on Sept. 21, giving the Rox a 3-run cushion in what was a 5-3 victory...made 23 starts in the outfield for Colorado, 16 in RF, 5 in LF and 2 in CF...went 4-for-16 as a pinch hitter with 1 RBI...finished with a combined .962 (51/53) fielding percentage with 3 OF assists...his first career OF assist came July 29 in Cincinnati when he threw out Reds starter Jimmy Haynes at first base on what should have been a single.
2002
In his first season at Double A, Reyes led Carolina with a .292 (133-for-455) batting average, 10th best in the Southern League ... ranked second in the league in extra-base hits (51), third in doubles (33) and total bases (216) and fourth in slugging (.475) ... set a career high with 14 home runs ... after hitting .264 (62-for-235) during his first three months of the season, Rene caught fire down the stretch, batting .331 (39-for-118) with 5 homers and 19 RBI in July and then .314 (32-for-102) with 2 homers and 8 RBI in August ... hit safely in 19 of his last 25 games, including an 11-game hit streak, Aug. 13-26 (.390, 16-for- 41) ... on the year, played 75 games in the outfield (53 RF, 17 LF, 5 CF) and 41 games at first base ... hit for the cycle on June 10 at Greenville, going 4-for-4 with 3 RBI ... became just the fourth Rockie minor leaguer to accomplish the feat, joining Scott Seal (8/3/00), Ben Petrick (5/9/99) and Neifi Perez (8/25/96) ... belted a grand slam on June 24 at Jacksonville ... played for Caracas of the Venezuela Winter League following the season and finished third in the league with a .346 batting average (44-for-127).
2001
Reyes was named the South Atlantic League MVP after the 2001 season...he was also named a league all star as a first baseman...Rene played in 128 of the 139 possible games for the Southern Division Champion Asheville Tourists (A)...he was also named the organization MVP for Asheville at seasons end...Rene stole 53 bases, the fifth highest single-season total for SB's in franchise history...he set career highs in games played (128), runs (71), hits (156), doubles (27), homers (11), RBI (61), walks (28) and stolen bases...Rene had hit streaks of five or more games on eight separate occasions...his season high was a 10-game hit streak from June 27-July 7 when he batted .359 (14-for-39) with a homer, three RBI and six runs scored...hit .035 points higher at home (.340) than on the road (.305)...his best month came in July when the switch hitter batted .378 (37-for-98) and added with four doubles, two homers and drove in 11 runs...in the final two months of the year (July and August) Reyes combined for a .355 average (70-for-197) with eight doubles, four homers and 24 RBI...Rene played exactly 60 games at both first base and right field in '01...he also played four games in left field and four as the team's DH.
2000
Rene was injured the entire 2000 season after undergoing surgery on his right knee to clean up cartilage...he was on the disabled list from April 6-September 29.
1999
Reyes saw time with the Asheville Tourists and in the Arizona Rookie League...with Asheville, he batted .350 (56-for-160) in 40 games, 36 as the DH and the other four came at first base...he finished the year with a nine-game hitting streak that he started on August 29 and ended in the final game of the season, September 6...during that streak, he batted .447 (17-for-38) and scored 11 runs...playing for the Rockies Arizona Rookie League team, Reyes batted .361 (35-for-97) with four doubles, four homers and finished with 16 RBI...he split time at both first base and behind the plate...in 10 road games, Rene batted .395 (17-for-43), .062 points higher than his home batting average of .333...his combined numbers for the 1999 season, a .354 (91-for-257) batting average, 47 runs scored, 10 doubles, five triples, four homers and 39 RBI.
1998
The switch hitter was a member of the Arizona Rookie League Championship team...he was named the league MVP and was selected to the all-star team as the first baseman...on the year, he finished first in the league in average (.429), RBI (39), hits (76), on-base percentage (.493), total bases (108)...he was second in slugging percentage (.610), third in homers (5) and fourth in runs scored (40).
1997
In his first professional season, Rene played in the Venezuelan Summer League for Guacara...his primary position was catcher.
