Was born in Columbia, Mo. and graduated in 1999 from Newbury Park (Calif.) High School where he played baseball and football...also attended Moorpark (Calif.) Junior College where he was named First Team All-Western State Conference... was scouted and signed by Chuck Fick.
2007
First full season with the Major League club was interrupted by a nearly two month long stint on the disabled list. Missed 41 games with left biceps tendinitis. Made four rehab outings, three at Springfield (AA) and one at Memphis (AAA). Held lefthanded batters to .224 BA (15-67), walking six & fanning 14. Three of his last 5 HR's allowed came against lefties. Allowed runs in just two of his final 18 games after returning from DL. Appeared in 37 of the team's first 67 games. Struck out 3 in 2.0 perfect IP 4/18 at SF- his longest outing of the season. Retired first batter in 10th 4/22 at CHI for his first Hold. Retired all three batters 4/27 vs. CHI in the 7th. Came in with bases loaded on 4/28 against CHI and allowed all 3 runners to score and one of his own - his first run allowed for the season. That run snapped a 10.0 IP scoreless streak through 15 regular season outings, dating back to 9/25/06. Fanned T. Helton, but bases-loaded walk forced home go-ahead run in 9th on 5/7 at COL. Appeared in six of the nine games of the 5/11-20 road trip to SD, LA and DET. Was unscored upon first five outings of trip. After giving up his 1st HR of the year on 5/29, retired lone lefty faced 5/30 at COL. Earned 1st win of '07 on 6/6 vs. CIN with 1.0 IP. It was his1st win since 9/30/06 vs. MIL. Suffered 1st loss & blown save 6/8 vs. LAA, allowing four runs on four hits. Placed on the 15-day DL 6/19 with left biceps tendinitis. Was activated on 8/6 after missing 41 games. Had a season-high 9.0 IP, 11-game scoreless streak that stretched from 8/24-9/21 before allowing 3 runs on 9/22 vs. HOU.
2006
Began the season at Triple-A but after recall on 5/9 remained in St. Louis the rest of the season...Lefthanded batters were 17-for-77 (.221 BA) with 10 BB & 24 K's. Allowed 3 HR's to LH batters, including walk-off HR's to Geoff Jenkins in 9th 9/20 at MIL and 9/23 to Luke Scott at HOU...He retired the first 18 lefties he faced to begin the season...Lost his first four decisions, then gained wins in his final two appeaances of the year...Was recalled from Memphis on 5/9 (Ponson-DL) and retired eight of the first nine batters he faced, without allowing a hit...Allowed just three hits while walking none and fanning seven in his last four outings (5.1 IP) at Memphis...Was 0-0, 8.64 ERA in eight appearances for the Redbirds...Was on Memphis disabled list from April 12-21 with left shoulder tendinitis...Retired three straight batters for his12th Hold 9/10 at ARI, stranding two runners...Retired all five batters faced 8/29 vs. FLA with two Ks...Matched a career high with 3 Ks on 8/24 at NY (also 7/5 at ATL)...Stranded all three runners 8/5 vs. MIL when Edmonds made diving grab in CF for final out in the 6th...Suffered 1st blown save & loss #2 on 7/27 at CHI...Walked & fanned a career high 3 each in 7/5 outing at ATL, but allowed 3 runs in his 1.0 IP...Came in with bases loaded 7/3 vs. KC & allowed 2 runs but picked up 7th Hold...Took his 1st loss 6/24 at DET, allowing walk and walk-off double in the 10th...Fanned two batters 6/11 at MIL, but allowed his first hit to LH batter...Allowed his first homer in the majors 6/7, a 3-run shot by Reds' Rich Aurilia...Worked 2.0 scoreless IP on 5/28 at SD, a career high...Allowed first career runs (3) on 5/22 at SF...He had 5.1 scoreless IP to start career.
2005
A Rule 5 selection by Oakland in the December 2004 draft, but was returned to the Cards organization during spring training...was a September call-up after having his contract purchased from Triple-A Memphis on 9/2...lefty appeared in five games for St. Louis and did not allow a run in 2.2 IP...went 2-1 with seven saves in 57 games pitched with Triple-A Memphis... pitched 59.0 innings with 26 walks and 77 strikeouts...his 77 strikeouts led all Memphis relievers and ranked 2nd in the Pacific Coast League (Kane Davis, Nashville) among PCL pitchers without any starts...averaged 11.75 strikeouts per nine innings, tops among Cardinals full season minor leaguers...went 1-0 with six saves, a 1.84 ERA (29.1 IP / 6 ER), eight walks and 43 strikeouts in the final three months at Memphis...went 1-0 with four saves and a 1.76 ERA in 12 July games...did not allow a run for the Redbirds, while surrendering just eight hits, in his final 11 appearances (12.0 IP) with a walk and 15 strikeouts...limited right-handed batters to a .220 batting average, while lefties hit .250 off him at Memphis...the first batters he faced went 11-for-54 (.206) with three walks and 21 strikeouts...pitched a season high 2.1 innings and retired all seven batters on 7/27 vs. Sacramento in picking up save #6...made his ML debut 9/6 vs. CHI with scoreless IP that included BB, K and DP...suffered first blown save on 9/13 when he gave up a single that scored the tying run...earned his first career hold on the final day of the season (10/2 vs. CIN) with 0.2 IP, 2BB and 2K's.
2004
Spent the entire season at Double-A Tennessee and pitched exclusively in relief for the first time in his career...was 2-2 with a 4.79 ERA and four saves in 53 appearances...his games pitched total was a career high and the saves were the first of his career...struck out 77 batters in 56.1 innings, an average of 12.3 per nine innings...now has 402 strikeouts in 338.1 career innings in the minors, an average of 10.7 per nine innings...allowed just four home runs in 56.1 innings or one per 14.1 innings...led the Smokies in games pitched and tied for third in strikeouts...allowed a .230 opponents batting average which included a .233 (14 for 60) mark against left handed hitters and .228 (34 for 149) against right-handers...opponents hit .217 (15 for 69) with runners in scoring position...struggled early in the season as he was 0-2 with one save, a 9.50 ERA (19 er in 18.0 ip) and .299 (23 for 77) opponents batting average over his first 17 outings through May 24...was on the disabled list from May 25 to June 6 with left shoulder tendinitis...returned to action on June 12 and went 2-0 with three saves, a 2.04 ERA (8 er in 35.1 ip) and .172 (21 for 122) opponents batting average over his final 33 games...tossed a season high 2.0 innings on eight occasions and pitched at least 1.0 innings in 41 of his 53 outings...struck out a season high three batters 10 times and recorded a strikeout in 39 of his outings....recorded his first professional save by tossing a scoreless inning on April 17 against Mobile...allowed a season high six runs on five hits in 0.1 innings and took the loss on May 21 against West Tennessee...did not allow a run over a 10-game stretch from July 17 to August 8 (13.1 ip, 4 h, 2 bb, 22 so) and posted a 0.44 ERA (1 er in 20.1 ip) over a 17-game span from July 17 to August 24...then allowed at least one run in four of his final five regular season outings (5 er in 4.2 ip, 9.64 ERA)...posted a 3.00 ERA (3.0 ip, 2 h, 3 r, 1 er, 3 bb, 4 so) in two postseason appearances for Tennessee who were declared Southern League Co-Champions in 2004 after the championship series was cancelled due to the threat posed by Hurricane Ivan.
2003
Split his third pro season between Single-A Palm Beach and Double-A Tennessee...went 5-5 with a 3.08 ERA in 22 games, 10 starts, for Palm Beach...struck out 81 batters in 79.0 innings pitched...lost five of his first six appearances on the season, including five straight losses from April 17 to May 8...rebounded to pick up all five wins between May 13-July 2...earned back-to-back wins on May 13 vs. Sarasota and May 18 at Clearwater, tossing a season high 7.1 innings in each outing...made his Double-A debut at Tennessee on July 11, allowing one earned run (home run) in 1.2 innings against Huntsville...picked up only his only Southern League win in the second game of a doubleheader on July 29 at Orlando, pitching 2.0 scoreless frames...overall at Tennessee went 1-0 with a sterling 1.65 ERA in 27.1 innings and held Southern League hitters to just a .168 batting average...was not scored upon in seven straight appearances from July 29-August 19 (9.0 ip, 1 h).
2002
Spent entire season at Single-A Peoria where he posted a 15-3 mark and a 2.00 ERA in 22 games, 18 starts, while leading the Chiefs to the Midwest League Championship...led all Cardinal minor league hurlers in wins and ERA...also ranked fourth in the Redbird system with 132 strikeouts and 10th in batting average against (.218)...earned Cardinals' Pitcher-of-the- Year honors...ranked first in the Midwest League in strikeouts per nine innings pitched (9.48), tied for first in wins, second in ERA and fourth in average against (.213 as a starter)...was named to the Midwest League All-Star team...struck out a seasonhigh 11 batters on April 14 vs. Burlington...held opponents to one run or less in 12 of his 22 games...won seven of his final eight decisions of the season, allowing just nine earned runs in 51.0 innings (1.59 ERA).
2001
Made his professional debut at Rookie League Johnson City, going 1-1 with a 2.66 ERA in nine starts...struck out 58 batters in only 40.2 innings of work...was promoted to Single-A Peoria and made three starts...went 0-1 with a 3.95 ERA in 13.2 innings.
