OAKLAND, Calif. - The Oakland A's selected three players on Day 1 of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft, including two pitchers from the University of Florida and right-handed pitcher Daulton Jefferies from the University of California. Jefferies was the A's Lottery Round A pick (37^th selection overall) and Oakland also selected left-handed pitcher A.J. Puk (1^st round, 6^th selection overall) and right-handed pitcher Logan Shore (2^nd round, 47^th overall).
Puk is 2-3 with a 3.21 ERA and .195 opponents batting average in 15 starts this year with Florida. He has struck out 95 batters in just 70.0 innings, while walking 31. The 6-7, 230 pound left-hander is 16-9 with a 3.45 ERA in 52 career appearances in three seasons with the Gators and has fanned 245 batters in 190.1 innings. Florida continues its season when it hosts Florida State in a best-of-three NCAA Super Regional this Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
Jefferies went 7-0 with a 1.08 ERA and .185 opponents batting average in eight starts for Cal in 2016. He struck out 53 and walked just eight in 50.0 innings. The right-handed junior missed two months of the season with calf and shoulder injuries but returned to make two starts at the end of May. Jefferies was an All-Pac-12 first team selection as a sophomore in 2015. He compiled a 13-13 record and a 2.86 ERA in 34 games, including 33 starts, in three seasons with the Bears.
Shore was a Baseball America First Team All-America selection and Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Year this year. He is currently 11-0 with a 2.44 ERA and .223 opponents batting average in 16 starts with Florida. The right-handed junior has 80 strikeouts and just 15 walks in 92.1 innings. Shore looks to extend a school record 16-game winning streak in the NCAA Super Regionals against Florida State this weekend.
The draft resumes tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. with rounds three through 10 and concludes Saturday at 9:00 am with rounds 11 through 40.
