The Texas Rangers today announced that the club placed outfielder Carlos Gomez on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, with a right hamstring strain. The team has also purchased the contract of outfielder Jared Hoying (#31) from Triple-A Round Rock and transferred infielder Hanser Alberto from the 10-day to the 60-day disabled list.
Gomez sustained the injury to his right hamstring while running the bases and scoring from second base in the seventh inning of Sunday's game versus Oakland. He underwent an MRI and further examination by Rangers Team Physician Dr. Keith Meister on Monday, when the club announced that the test confirmed a right hamstring strain. Gomez is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks.
Gomez has batted .246 with 4 home runs, and 13 RBI over 38 games with Texas this season, starting 38 of the club's 39 games in center field. He ranks tied for fifth in the American League with a team-best 11 doubles.
Hoying, who turns 28 on Thursday, has batted .242 (31-128) with 7 home runs, 9 doubles, and 23 RBI in 36 games with Round Rock this season, posting an .812 OPS figure. He leads the Express in home runs, RBI, doubles (tied), and walks (tied-18). He has a .300 (12-40) average with runners in scoring position for the Express, playing primarily in center field.
Hoying was a non-roster invitee to Rangers spring training camp, going 10-for-52 with 2 home runs and 5 RBI in a team-high 31 Cactus League games. He made his major league debut with Texas in 2016, batting .217 with no home runs and 5 RBI in 39 games. He was also on the club's roster for the American League Division Series against Toronto, appearing in 2 games.
Alberto opened the season on the 10-day disabled list with right shoulder tightness after last appearing in a spring training game on March 12. The first date he would be eligible to be reinstated is June 1.
Following today's transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the major league roster, and now have four players on the 60-day disabled list: Alberto, left-handed pitcher Jake Diekman, first baseman Prince Fielder, and right-handed pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez.
RANGERS SIGN OF DREW STUBBS TO MINORS CONTRACT: Texas has also signed outfielder Drew Stubbs to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Round Rock. He is expected to be active for tonight's Express game at Reno. This will be his fourth separate stint in the Rangers organization since the 2015 season, as he has seen action at the major league level with the club in each of the past two seasons.
The 32-year-old veteran was in spring training with the Minnesota Twins as a non-roster invitee to big league camp before being released on March 26 and signing a minors deal with the San Francisco Giants on April 6. He batted .256 (10-39) in 10 games with Sacramento (AAA) and had his contract purchased by the Giants on April 24. Stubbs hit .091 (2-22) in 10 games with San Francisco, but was designated for assignment on May 6 and assigned outright to Sacramento on May 8 before electing free agency on May 10.
