The Miami Marlins tonight selected left-handed pitcher Trevor Rogers with the 13^th overall pick in the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft. The announcement was made by Marlins Vice President of Scouting Stan Meek.
Rogers, 19, went 11-0 with a 0.33 ERA (63.1 ip/3 er) in 11 starts as a senior at Carlsbad High School in New Mexico, striking out 134 batters and walking just 13. He also registered a .394 batting average with seven doubles, six triples, three home runs, and 26 RBI at the plate. As a junior, he went 9-2 with a 0.70 ERA (69.2/37) and 122 strikeouts, leading the Cavemen to a Class 6A state championship. He finished his high school career with a 26-5 record and 0.73 ERA (182.0/19), with 325 strikeouts.
Rogers is the first player drafted out of Carlsbad High School since his second cousin, Cody Ross, who played 12 seasons in the Majors (2003-15), including parts of five with the Marlins (2006-10).
With its second pick of the night, Miami selected University of North Carolina center fielder Brian Miller (Raleigh, NC) in Competitive Balance Round A (36^th overall). Miller recently completed his junior season with the Tar Heels, batting .343 (93x271) in 63 games, with 61 runs scored, 16 doubles, three triples, seven home runs, and 49 RBI. He also struck out just 35 times and drew 38 walks, while going 24-of-30 in stolen base attempts.
After walking on at UNC as a freshman and starting 33 games, Miller broke out as a sophomore. He led the team in batting (.345), runs (56), on-base percentage (.440), and steals (21), and then followed that campaign by earning Cape Cod League All-Star honors for Orleans. As a junior, he once again led UNC in batting, runs, OBP (.422), and steals.
Miami closed out Day 1 by going local, selecting North Carolina State shortstop Joe Dunand (Miami, FL) in the second round (51^st overall). He recently completed his junior year with the Wolfpack, batting .287 (60x209) in 61 games, with 42 runs scored, 12 doubles, three triples, 18 home runs, a .632 slugging percentage, and 51 RBI. Dunand, who attended Gulliver Schools, is the nephew of former Major Leaguer Alex Rodriguez.
