Major League Baseball announced Saturday that Cleveland Indians catcher Yan Gomes has been named an American League All-Star, replacing Tampa Bay C Wilson Ramos, who left his game Saturday at Minnesota with a strained hamstring.
Gomes, 30, is an All-Star for the first time in his career and the first Indians catcher selected since Victor Martίnez in 2009. He entered play today with the third-highest OPS among American League catchers, batting .251 (61-for-243) with 17 doubles, 10 home runs and 31 RBI in 67 games. Always reliable behind the plate, Gomes has thrown out 31.6% (12-for-38) of potential base stealers this season and his 18 RBI since June 1 rank second among all A.L. catchers. 
Joining five teammates, the Indians now have six A.L. All-Stars for the first time since 1999 and Cleveland has tied Houston for the most player representatives in MLB.
The 89th annual Midsummer Classic will be held Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C. Coverage begins at 7:30 p.m. on FOX.
