The Pittsburgh Pirates today placed infielder Jordy Mercer on the 10-day disabled list (retro to August 15) with a left calf strain.
To take Mercer's place on the 25-man active roster, outfielder Jordan Luplow has been recalled from Indianapolis.
The club has also selected the contract of infielder Kevin Newman from Indianapolis. To make room for Newman on the 25-man roster, catcher Jacob Stallings has been optioned to Triple-A. To clear a space on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Casey Sadler has been designated for assignment.
The 25-year-old Newman hit .302 (132-for-437) with 30 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 35 RBI and 28 stolen bases in 109 games this season with Indianapolis, including a .366 clip (15-for-41) over his last 10 games. He entered the day ranked fifth among all International League hitters in batting (.302), first in stolen bases (28) and runs scored (74) and second in doubles (30). Newman, who has no previous big league experience, was Pittsburgh's first round pick (19th overall) in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft. He will wear uniform #27.
