3B Kris Bryant Named N.L. All-Star Reserve

June 30th, 2019

Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant today was named to the National League All-Star team. He will be a reserve at the 90th Major League Baseball All-Star Game Tuesday, July 9 at Cleveland’s Progressive Field.

Bryant joins shortstop Javier Báez and catcher Willson Contreras, both of whom will start the All-Star Game for the second year in a row, though Báez was the N.L.’s starting second baseman in 2018. The Cubs will have three players represent the club at the All-Star Game for the second year in a row and third time in the last four seasons, as pitcher Jon Lester joined Báez and Contreras last year and seven Cubs made the club in 2016.

This season marks Bryant’s third career All-Star appearance, as he was named as a reserve in 2015 and voted to start the game for the N.L. in 2016. He is now one of only three third basemen in franchise history to earn at least three All-Star nods, joining Ron Santo (nine times, 1963-66, 1968-69, 1971-73) and Stan Hack (four times, 1938-39, 1941, 1943).

Báez is the first player in major league history to start the All-Star game at second base and shortstop in back-to-back seasons. He joins Bobby Grich and Granny Hamner as the lone players to start an All-Star Game at both shortstop and second base at any point, as Grich did so once at shortstop (1972) and twice at second base (1976, 1982), all in the American League, while Hamner did so once at shortstop (1952) and once at second base (1954) in the National League.

Contreras is the first Cub catcher to start the All-Star game in consecutive seasons since Gabby Hartnett in 1936-37.   Contreras is only the fourth different N.L. catcher to start the game in consecutive seasons in the last 25 years, joining Buster Posey (2015-17), Yadier Molina (2009-10) and Mike Piazza (1994-99, 2001-02, 2004-05).
