McCutchen apologizes to Bucs official scorer

PITTSBURGH -- Andrew McCutchen apologized to Pirates official scorer Tony Krizmanich on Wednesday night after saying he should be let go for giving the center fielder an error on a tough play during the Bucs' 6-2 loss to the Cubs earlier in the day.
With two outs in the third inning, Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo ripped a line drive to center field. McCutchen charged in, slid and caught the hard-hit ball, but it fell out of his glove as he continued to slide.
The play, which could have ended the inning, was ruled an error by Krizmanich. On Juan Nicasio's next pitch, Ben Zobrist hit a three-run homer that opened the scoring and sent the Cubs to a convincing series sweep of the Pirates.
After the game, McCutchen said Rizzo's hit was smoked and a "knuckleball" off his bat, and he did everything he could to catch it.

"Whoever scored that an error should be fired. That's unbelievable. I'd like them to try to catch it," McCutchen said. "I did everything I could to try to catch it. When my glove hit the ground, it popped out. Tried to catch it, that's all you can do."
McCutchen apologized to Krizmanich on Wednesday night through a team spokesman, saying he was sorry and explaining that he understands the scorer's job is difficult. McCutchen admitted he was frustrated following the three-game sweep -- during which the Pirates were outscored, 20-5 -- and took it out on the wrong person.
