ATLANTA -- Shortly after right-handed pitcher Anibal Sanchez was carted off the field with what appears to be a significant leg injury, the Braves opted to activate Johan Camargo at least a day earlier than expected.
Recognizing that Sanchez will likely be sidelined for a significant period with the injury that led him to be carted off the field before Wednesday night's 7-3 win over the Phillies at SunTrust Park, the Braves decided to add another bat to their bench for this series finale.
Camargo received the late notice a couple hours after going 3-for-5 with a double in Triple-A Gwinnett's win over Scranton-Wilkes Barre on Wednesday afternoon. The versatile infielder struck out in a seventh-inning pinch-hit appearance against the Phillies. He had been on the disabled list because of the right oblique strain he suffered during a March 13 Grapefruit League game.
Sanchez fell to the ground and remained on his stomach until the Braves' medical staff reached him and turned him over on his back. Stadium paramedics put a hip-high air cast on the veteran hurler's right leg before carting him off the field.
"He was just out running and was on his last sprint," Braves manager Brian Snitker said. "It was just his day-before-he-pitches workout. It wasn't anything strenuous or anything. He's one of those pros who has a routine. It was just one of those freak things. It will probably take some time to get him back on the mound."
The Braves are currently describing Sanchez's injury as a right hamstring strain. But this appears to be an injury that might sideline him for a couple months.
Sanchez was scheduled to start Thursday night's game against the Mets. The Braves haven't announced who will start in his place. But the fact Lucas Sims wasn't announced as the replacement creates reason to believe Matt Wisler will be promoted from Gwinnett to make the start.
