BALTIMORE -- A's lefty Rich Hill limited the O's to one run on two hits over 5 2/3 innings to win his fourth game of the season as Oakland topped Baltimore, 8-4, in the first game of a split doubleheader on Saturday at Camden Yards.
Led by Marcus Semien, who had an RBI single and two-run homer, Oakland posted 15 hits en route to snapping a four-game losing skid. Jed Lowrie went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored in the A's series-opening win.
Utilizing an effective curveball all day, Hill struck out five and walked three, throwing 103 pitches to lower his ERA to 2.39.
"It was one of those days where the curveball was working and we were able to spot up some fastballs," Hill said. "That was a great team win."
After the A's touched Mike Wright for five runs over five-plus innings, Semien went deep off Orioles lefty reliever Brian Matusz in the eighth to close Oakland's scoring.

"I don't know if I've been involved in a game with more tough luck by the pitcher," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of Wright's 10 hits allowed. "But they're hits. You hit them where people don't play. I'm hoping we'll have some of that good fortune in the second game."
MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Singles night: Of the A's 15 hits, 12 were singles, three of them hit in a row with two outs in the second to bring in their first run of the day. Three base hits belonged to Lowrie, who improved to 13-for-24 with runners in scoring position this season with his two-run single in a three-run sixth.
"I don't know that anybody's been as consistent, at least for us," A's manager Bob Melvin said. "You look at his numbers with runners in scoring position, they're as good as any in the league. He's off to a nice little start."

What a relief: Hill left runners on first and second with two outs for Ryan Dull, with room for the Orioles to break through. Dull, who entered the day as one of two qualifying relievers in the Majors not to allow a first batter faced to reach base, walked his first batter to load the bases but proceeded to strike out Jonathan Schoop to end the threat. Dull has stranded all 11 of his inherited runners, and his work helped Hill remain undefeated (4-0) on the road this season, with a 1.09 ERA.
"That was huge," Melvin said of Dull's work. "One swing of the bat, and now they're right back in the game. We always feel great about him with guys on base, especially with right-handers in there. He did his job, got us a bit deeper into the game, too. When you're going through a day-night doubleheader, you're trying to use as few guys as you can."

Orioles bats stay cold until late: An Orioles club that entered the game with one run in 22 innings continued to struggle to make things happen. Baltimore left the bases loaded, scoring only once, in the sixth inning despite two walks, a hit by pitch and a single.
A three-run ninth, two coming on Pedro Alvarez's two-out double off Liam Hendriks, cut the deficit in half, but the O's could get no closer as A's closer Sean Doolittle struck out Mark Trumbo for the game's final out.

Matusz struggling to find a rhythm: The Orioles lefty, who started the season on the disabled list, has been unable to get on a roll since his return. In five outings, Matusz has pitched 3 1/3 innings and given up four earned runs on six hits and five walks. He picked up his first strikeout this season during Saturday's eighth inning.
"You try to trust him. He got a lot of innings, we stretched him out, did a lot of things to try to get him ... I was hoping he'd be a little crisper when he got back, but he hasn't found it yet," Showalter said. "We hope he does soon, because he can be a valuable guy."
WHAT'S NEXT
A's: The A's will play the second game of the split doubleheader, with right-hander Jesse Hahn getting the start against the Orioles in the 4:05 p.m. PT contest. Hahn made his 2016 debut a week ago, holding the Astros to three hits in 6 2/3 scoreless innings.
Orioles:Ubaldo Jimenez will look to get the O's a split in the doubleheader when he starts the 7:05 p.m. ET nightcap. Jimenez is looking to bounce back from his last outing, in which he went 4 1/3 innings and allowed six runs to the White Sox.
