Gurriel sent to DL after completing suspension

Astros won't rush first baseman's return from hand surgery

HOUSTON -- Astros first baseman Yuli Gurriel was placed on the 10-day disabled list following Monday's 6-1 win over the Orioles. The Astros had hoped Gurriel, who sat out the first five games because of a suspension, would be healthy enough to play Tuesday, but they decided to be cautious with him.

Gurriel, who was suspended for the insensitive gesture he made toward Yu Darvish in last year's World Series, has been in Florida all week rehabbing from Feb. 28 surgery to remove the hook of the hamate bone in his left hand. He faced about 25-30 pitches on Monday from pitcher James Hoyt during live batting practice.

"We just decided to err on the side of caution," Astros manager AJ Hinch said. "There's been no setback, there's not really any issue other than we wanted to give him a couple more days and our only option is to put him on the DL."

Hinch said Gurriel will work out in Florida for the next couple of days before reporting to Double-A Corpus Christi to begin a rehab assignment Friday. He's eligible to return from the DL on April 13 against the Rangers in Houston.

Gurriel, who was signed out of Cuba and made his big league debut in 2016, hit .299 with 18 homers and 75 RBIs and recorded the final out of the World Series last year. He started 130 games at first base for the Astros in '17, his first full season in the big leagues.

Hoyt, on the DL with a left oblique strain, will pitch one more time this week before beginning a rehab assignment Friday at Triple-A Fresno.
