ST. LOUIS -- Ben Zobrist walked into the Cubs clubhouse Tuesday, eager to give fist pumps to his teammates to show off his new jewelry. Kansas City general manager Dayton Moore drove to St. Louis on Monday night to present Zobrist with his World Series ring, won last year with the Royals.
"He drove over from across the state and made a point to deliver it to me in person," Zobrist said Tuesday. "They also gave me one of the [Royals] jerseys with the gold lettering on it that they wore. It was very cool for him to deliver it personally and reiterate the important part I played in the championship run."
Zobrist said he'll wear the ring, which features a "KC" logo made from custom-cut blue sapphires, when he does signings and speaking engagements.
Anthony Rizzo certainly enjoyed it. He was wearing it around the clubhouse.
Who knows? One day, Zobrist could be wearing a ring celebrating a Cubs' World Series championship.
"It's a dream," Zobrist said. "It's just a reminder when you're in the middle of playing, you're not thinking so much about being a World Series champion because we're in the middle of trying to win one here in Chicago. It's a cool memory just to remember how special that was. It's a memento for all of us to carry with us throughout our lives and remember that special time."
