Reds place Hamilton, Reed on disabled list

September 16th, 2016

CINCINNATI -- The Reds placed center fielder and left-handed pitcher on the 15-day disabled list Friday. Both moves were retroactive to Sept. 5.
Hamilton hasn't played since Sept. 4, because of a strained left oblique suffered as he checked his swing in a game vs. the Cardinals. Reed hasn't pitched since suffering lower back spasms during his most recent start for Triple-A Louisville on Aug. 29.
There were no corresponding roster moves to add players.
Typically, with expanded rosters in September, placing players on the DL during the season's final month isn't done. According to the Reds, the transactions were considered procedural moves, since neither player was currently able to play. The club did it to keep track of its disabled list and games missed data.
Worth noting
• The Reds revealed that will get the start on Sunday vs. the Pirates. Straily, who pitched a career-high eight innings and allowed two runs in a 6-4 win over the Brewers on Tuesday, will be working on regular rest.
Manager Bryan Price had considered pushing Straily back a day in favor of . But with a doubleheader on Saturday, the club wanted Sampson available from the bullpen in case of a short start.
If Sampson doesn't pitch this weekend, Price said he could be available to start in the next series vs. the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
