TORONTO -- Blue Jays No. 1 prospect Anthony Alford sustained a concussion following a collision with a teammate on Friday during the 12th inning of Class A Dunedin's 3-2 loss to St. Lucie, according to an update released by the team on Saturday.
Alford, the No. 37 prospect overall according to MLBPipeline.com, collided with shortstop Richard Urena on a shallow flyball to centre field. The 21-year-old remained down for 15 minutes before being taken off the field on a stretcher.
The former football star at Ole Miss was taken to Mease Dunedin Hospital, where a CT scan did not reveal any fractures. Alford has since been released from hospital and diagnosed with a concussion, according to the Blue Jays.
St. Lucie's Tomas Nido hit a fly ball to shallow centre with the bases loaded. The infield fly rule was called, but Urena, the Dunedin shortstop, collided with a charging Alford, allowing the winning run to score.
It's been a difficult season for Alford, who exited Dunedin's home opener with an injured knee and missed a majority of the season's first month. Toronto's third-round Draft pick in 2012 has hit .205 with an OPS of .540 and one home run in 32 games.
