SAN FRANCISCO -- First baseman Brandon Belt, who has undergone most of his recovery from concussion symptoms in private, ran light sprints and performed agility exercises in short left field at AT&T Park before Wednesday's game.
Belt, who last appeared in a game on Aug. 4, won't return this season. However, manager Bruce Bochy welcomed the sight of his increased activity -- "more for his peace of mind as he heads to the offseason."
Belt, 29, hit .241/.355/.469 with 18 home runs and 51 RBIs in 104 games this year.
Worth noting
• The Giants added to their perceived depth by claiming right-handed starter/reliever Pierce Johnson from the Chicago Cubs, the club's No. 25 prospect, according to MLBPipeline.com.
Johnson, 26, was Chicago's 43rd overall selection in the 2012 MLB Draft. Johnson owns a 29-21 record with a 3.24 ERA in 130 appearances (74 starts). He made his Major League debut this year on May 19, allowing a pair of unearned runs in one inning. 
To accommodate Johnson on the 40-man roster, the Giants transferred Belt to the 60-day disabled list.
• Bochy mentioned offhandedly that general manager Bobby Evans and Jeremy Shelley, his assistant, are currently in Japan scouting players.
"Doing our due diligence, as they say," Bochy said.
Among the performers Evans and Shelley likely are scrutinizing is Shohei Ohtani, the noted pitcher-outfielder who's currently with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of Nippon Professional Baseball's Pacific League.
