The Atlanta Braves have agreed to terms with free-agent catcher Kurt Suzuki on a one-year contract for the 2017 season. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Suzuki, 33, played the past three seasons for the Minnesota Twins and batted .258 (89-for-345) with 34 runs, 24 doubles, eight home runs and 49 RBI in 2016. He appeared in 99 games behind the plate last season, which tied for sixth most in the American League. During his first campaign with Minnesota in 2014, he was named an American League All-Star and was also honored with the Bob Allison Award for determination, hustle, tenacity, competitive spirit and leadership by the Twin Cities chapter of the BBWAA.
The 5-foot-11, 200-pound catcher is a veteran of 10 Major League seasons and has appeared in 1,208 games, including 1,152 at catcher since entering the majors in 2007 (fourth most in the league in that span). He needs just 209.1 innings behind the plate to eclipse 10,000 frames caught.
Originally drafted by Oakland in the second round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft, he ranks fifth in A's history with 684 games caught after spending parts of seven seasons with the club. A career .256 hitter, his 1,029 hits as a catcher rank as fifth most since 2007, while his 216 doubles are tied for third with Brian McCann. 
A native of Wailuku, Hawaii, Suzuki played his first six seasons in Oakland before being traded to Washington in August 2012. He was traded back to Oakland from the Nationals in August 2013 before signing with Minnesota as a free agent prior to the 2014 season.
