Acuña will return to lineup for series vs. Nats

Albies remains sidelined with bone contusion in right wrist

Ronald Acuña Jr. will return to the lineup for Friday’s doubleheader against the Nationals at Truist Park, but the Braves will likely be without Ozzie Albies for at least another week.

Acuña has not played since exiting the second inning of Sunday night’s win in Philadelphia with tightness in his right hamstring. The 22-year-old outfielder was not restricted, as he took batting practice and shagged fly balls at Fenway Park on Tuesday, but the Braves opted to take the cautious route by allowing him to rest through Thursday.

“Hopefully on Friday he hits the ground running and is good to go for the rest of the time,” manager Brian Snitker said.

This has been a frustrating few weeks for Acuña, who returned from the injured list last week and played just four full games before having to deal with this hamstring ailment. But he’s been on the field much more frequently than Albies, who has been sidelined since Aug. 5 with a bone contusion in his right wrist.

“I know it’s killing Ozzie,” Snitker said. “If there is anybody who loves playing baseball more than him, I haven’t seen him yet. This kid is full of energy. He brings so much to our club. It would be great to get him back. It’s hard to remember the last time he was here.”

Albies spent most of August continuing to feel discomfort whenever he attempted to swing from the left side of the plate. But the young switch-hitter has created some recent encouragement while hitting off a tee and taking regular batting practice.

Snitker said that Albies will likely begin taking batting practice at the team’s alternate training site (Triple-A Gwinnett’s Coolray Field) within the next couple days.

“I think once he does that, we’ll know a little more about where he’s at,” Snitker said.
