ATLANTA -- Braves catcher Tyler Flowers received good news when he returned to Atlanta on Thursday and got confirmation that he did not suffer another left hand fracture.
Though a CT scan performed in Philadelphia on Wednesday had provided the same diagnosis, Flowers and the Braves wanted the peace of mind created by Thursday's visit with team physician Dr. Gary Lourie. Lourie read the scan and determined Flowers has swelling and soreness around the region where he was hit with a foul tip during Monday's loss to the Phillies.
"He's still sore, but still no fractures, according to Gary," Braves manger Brian Snitker said. "I guess there's a lot of blood in there and stuff. I think we'll know more in a couple days about what we're looking at."
The Braves aren't sure exactly how much time Flowers will miss, but they are concerned enough about the possibility of an extended absence, they have discussed possibly adding another catcher to their roster, which will expand Friday.

David Freitas was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett when Flowers was placed on the 10-day disabled list before the Braves swept Wednesday's doubleheader in Philadelphia. Freitas recorded his first Major League hit, a double in the fourth inning of the second game. He will surve as Kurt Suzuki's backup.
Flowers would certainly like an opportunity to put a fitting finish on what has been his finest season. Benefiting from the leg kick he added last year, the 31-year-old veteran is positioned to produce career highs in batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. Entering Thursday's action, his .823 OPS ranked third among all National League catchers with at least 325 plate appearances.
Roster additions
The Braves will begin to add to their expanded roster Friday, when they add right-hander Luke Jackson and lefties Ian Krol and Rex Brothers to their bullpen. Jackson was given a chance to rest when he was shut down Aug. 19 with right shoulder inflammation. As Krol has spent nearly all of August on the DL with what was termed a strained oblique, he has taken advantage of a chance to get in better shape and alter the mechanical flaws that plagued him as he produced a 5.75 ERA over 44 appearances.
Johan Camargo, Adonis Garcia and Danny Santana are all expected to be activated and added to Atlanta's roster Monday. It remains highly unlikely the Braves will add top prospect Ronald Acuna to their big league roster in September.
Camargo had established himself as the starting shortstop before he suffered a right knee bone bruise as he ran toward his position just before the start of an Aug. 9 game at SunTrust Park. Now that Dansby Swanson and Ozzie Albies have established themselves as the club's everyday middle infielders and Brandon Phillips was traded to the Angels, Camargo will likely be the everyday starter at third base.
