Flores out for season with broken nose

September 7th, 2017

NEW YORK -- The broken nose that has kept out of the Mets lineup this week will also keep him from returning this season.
Flores was originally only expected to miss a few days after he fouled a pitch off his nose Saturday in Houston. But he was still having trouble breathing Thursday, and after doctors reset the nose they recommended against playing until it healed.
"As much as I wanted to finish strong, I didn't want to put myself in danger," Flores said.
The 26-year-old Flores hit .271 in 362 plate appearances and started games at first base, second base and third base. He was hoping to get more regular time in September and prove to the Mets he can be an everyday player next season.

"I could have done better," Flores said. "I was looking to have a good September. It's not happening."
The Mets would like to play and at first base and shortstop next season, but second and third base both remain question marks for the team going forward. Manager Terry Collins said he believes Flores should get strong consideration for regular at-bats somewhere.
"I think what he did this year against right-handed pitchers changed some people's minds," Collins said.
Flores has been a bigger threat against lefties, but he did show improvement against right-handers this season, with a .262/.306/.459 slash line in 252 plate appearances.
