Glasnow, Hutchison both stake strong rotation claim

BRADENTON, Fla. -- It's safe to assume won't spend all year striking out six of every seven hitters he faces, like he did in his dominant Spring Training debut against the Orioles on Sunday. That wasn't the case during the Pirates' 5-2 win Friday, but he and manager Clint Hurdle still found several encouraging signs.
Glasnow, the Pirates' top-ranked prospect, allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out two in 1 2/3 innings at LECOM Park, running up against his pitch limit well before completing the three innings he was scheduled to throw. But he remained aggressive, mixed in his changeup, controlled the damage and corrected himself when his delivery was off.
"I feel like I got right back on track. A couple walks, but I'm very pleased with where I am right now," said Glasnow, who is competing for a spot in the Pirates' Opening Day rotation. "At least now I can recognize it sooner when my stride gets ahead of things, I feel my upper body getting a little long. Today was kind of a teachable moment. It's the first time in a game that I needed to make an adjustment."

Hurdle noted that Glasnow spent most of the day working from behind after throwing only three of 10 first-pitch strikes, but he commended the top prospect for avoiding a big inning. Glasnow threw a changeup to the first batter he faced, , and got him to ground out weakly to second base.
"That's another takeaway on the day," Glasnow said. "It felt nice."

Right-hander , also competing for a spot in the rotation, turned in a scoreless three-inning outing with four strikeouts.
"Overall, it was a good day," Hutchison said. "I can get, when I stay through the ball, late life on my fastball. I was able to do that a couple times today for a couple strikeouts, one looking and one swinging. I just need to locate down [in the zone] then go up when I want to, and I'm successful when I can do that."
Trying to throw more changeups while also establishing his fastball, Hutchison said he found a good rhythm in his final two innings. He has tried to find a balance between proving himself and preparing for the season.
"You have to find that right balance of making sure you're ready to go when the season starts, make sure you worked on everything and gotten everything to the point it needs to be," Hutchison said. "But you also have to go out there and compete and get the job done. You have to pick your spots and be smart about it."
