Rangers RHP Sam Dyson designated for assignment

The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has designated right-handed pitcher Sam Dyson for assignment and activated right-handed pitcher Jose Leclerc from the 10-day disabled list. The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Dyson to the minor leagues.

Dyson, 29, has a 1-6 record over 17 relief appearances with Texas this season, allowing 23 runs-20 earned runs in 16.2 innings. He is 0-for-4 in save chances with a .392 opponents average. Originally acquired in a July 31, 2015 trade with the Miami Marlins, he compiled a 2.04 ERA spanning 104 appearances with Texas in 2015-16, converting 40 of 45 (88.9%) save chances with 22 holds. Dyson made 8 appearances this spring in the Cactus League and with the World Baseball Classic champion Team USA, combining for 9.0 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit.

Leclerc has been on the 10-day disabled list with a bruised right index finger since May 8. He has a 0-1 record with a 2.31 ERA (3 ER/11.2 IP) and 18 strikeouts in 10 relief appearances for Texas. Leclerc has whiffed at least one batter in each of his 10 outings, averaging 13.89 strikeouts per 9 innings and holding opponents to a .143 (6-42) batting average. He made the Opening Day roster for the first time in 2017 after making his major league debut last season.

Leclerc made 2 appearances for Double-A Frisco on injury rehabilitation assignment: 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO. He last pitched on Tuesday vs. Northwest Arkansas: 1.0 IP, 3 SO, 18 pitches/10 strikes.

After today's transactions, the Rangers now have 39 players on the major league roster, along with 5 players on the 60-day disabled list.
