A's select eight players on Day 2 of 2017 First-Year Player Draft

The Oakland A's selected eight players on Day 2 of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft, which featured rounds three through 10. The selections included shortstop Nick Allen (3rd round, Francis Parker HS), third baseman Will Toffey (4th, Vanderbilt), catcher Santis Sanchez (5th, International Baseball Academy), left-handed pitcher Logan Salow (6th, Kentucky), right-handed pitcher Parker Dunshee (7th, Wake Forest), right-handed pitcher Brian Howard (8th, TCU), left-handed pitcher Jared Poche (9th, LSU) and outfielder Jack Meggs (10th, Washington).

Allen garnered 2017 Rawlings-Perfect Game Preseason First Team All-American honors as a high school senior and went on to bat .303 with 10 doubles and one home run in 23 games. A four-year varsity player, Allen posted a .469 batting average during his junior season while only committing three errors.

4(111), 3B Will Toffey (Vanderbilt / Barnstable, MA)

As a junior this season, Toffey led Vanderbilt with a .354 batting average and a .602 slugging percentage. He was recently named the MVP of the NCAA Tournament's Clemson Regional after going 9-for-19 with three home runs, eight runs and 10 RBI. In 2015, he was named to the Freshman All-American team and the Freshman All-SEC team.

Sanchez started 2017 on the Rawlings-Perfect Game Preseason Third Team All-American list and was named to the First Team for the Canada/Puerto Rico Region.

6(171), LHP Logan Salow (Kentucky / Ashland, KY)

Salow made 31 relief appearances for the Wildcats and ended the season with a 2-6 record and 12 saves. He allowed only 12 earned runs over 55.1 innings for a team-leading 1.95 ERA. Salow struck out 73 batters during the 2017 season while only walking 17. He was a key left-handed arm out of the bullpen during his four years at Kentucky.

7(201), RHP Parker Dunshee (Wake Forest / Zionsville, IN)

Dunshee went 9-1 as a member of the Demon Deacons' rotation during his senior season, ending with a 3.91 ERA over 103.2 innings pitched. He led the team in strikeouts over his 17 starts. As a junior in 2016, Dunshee was named Third Team All-ACC and All-Regional for his performance in the College Station regional.

8(231), RHP Brian Howard (TCU / St. Louis, MO)

DOB: 4/25/95

Howard has a 3.95 ERA in 18 starts this season and is leading the Horned Frogs in innings pitched and strikeouts. As a junior in 2016, he ended the season on the Big 12 Championship All-Tournament team and on the NCAA Fort Worth All-Regional team. He was drafted in 2016 by the Houston Astros in the 17th round but did not sign.

9(261), LHP Jared Poche (LSU / Lutcher, LA)

This season, Poche has a 10-3 record over 17 starts with a 3.42 ERA. In 2014 as a freshman, he was a Freshman All-American (Collegiate Baseball), Second Team Freshman All-American (Baseball America, Perfect Game, NCBWA) and a member of the SEC All-Tournament team.

10(291), OF Jack Meggs (Washington / Bellevue, WA)

Meggs ended his college career batting .265 with 15 doubles and three home runs as a senior. During his junior season, he was on the All-Pac-12 team and the Pac-12 All-Defensive team. He ranks fourth all-time in Washington history in both games played (212) and at bats (692).

The A's have drafted college players with eight of their first 11 selections. The breakdown includes four pitchers, one catcher, three infielders and three outfielders. The draft concludes tomorrow at 9 a.m. with rounds 11 through 40.
