Rays solid as Draft signing deadline nears

July 6th, 2017

ST. PETERSBURG -- With Friday's 5 p.m. deadline looming for 2017 draftees to sign, the Rays appear to be in solid shape.
The Rays have signed 10 of their 11 picks from the first 10 rounds, with Oregon State right-hander Drew Rasmussen (31st overall, first pick of Competitive Balance Round A) the exception.
Seventeen of the Rays' top 20 have signed, the latest being 18th-rounder Michael Smith. According to MLB.com's Jim Callis, the left-handed-hitting outfielder from San Jacinto signed for $197,500 on Thursday.
One notable exception is Kentucky right-hander Justin Lewis, who has yet to sign. The Rays selected Lewis in the 11th round.
Overall, the Rays will head into Friday having signed 29 of their 41 selections.
