DETROIT -- The Tigers were hoping Cameron Maybin would make his first rehab appearance in center field for Triple-A Toledo on Friday, but he remained at DH, as his right shoulder injury isn't healing as quickly as hoped.
The Tigers are expected to call up an outfielder after Sunday's game, before the trip to Washington, but it's not likely to be Maybin, who resumed his rehab last week. The Tigers want to see him play a few games in the outfield before he comes up, and they wouldn't bring him up just to DH.
"Cam's throwing. He throwing out to 120 feet," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "He's still got a little soreness, as of yesterday. He's supposed to throw again today."
Maybin went 0-for-2 with two walks on Friday. Ausmus said there's no pain for Maybin in swinging, only throwing.
He's dealt with several injuries already this season and hasn't yet made an appearance for the Tigers. He injured his right shoulder during the offseason when he slipped on some ice at his Asheville, N.C., home, then sustained a fractured left wrist on a hit-by-pitch in Spring Training. He re-injured the same shoulder when diving for a ball on April 23 with Toledo. An MRI showed no structural damage.
Anthony Gose has essentially been the Tigers' everyday centerfielder in Maybin's absence. He entered Saturday's game hitting .203 with a .613 OPS.

Ausmus has said it shouldn't take long for Maybin to return once he gets in the outfield. But he needs to get there, first.
"If his arm was healthy, he probably wouldn't need more than two or three [games], I would think," Ausmus said earlier this week. "The hard part is you can stick him out there, and he might not get a play in three games. It would be unlikely that he wouldn't get any plays, but point being he might not get many. I wouldn't think it would take more than two or three games if his arm was good. He's had plenty of at-bats."

• Victor Martinez has been taking ground balls for the past week in preparation to see some action at first base next week at Washington. Miguel Cabrera has also been taking more work at third base.
• Saturday's lineup originally didn't designate positions for Cabrera and Martinez. Ausmus said he wants to give Cabrera a day off his feet, but with potential rain Saturday, Cabrera will stay at first. They may switch on Sunday, with Cabrera going to DH.
• Ausmus told the Tigers to sleep in Saturday and not show up until 11:30 a.m. ET, and they didn't have scheduled batting practice, inside or outside. It's a day game after a night game, but Ausmus also wants them to relax, mentally.
"We've been taking batting practice and losing, so let's not think about it so much," he said. "Let's just go play a baseball game, like in Little League."
