Bellinger's father, Clay, is a former outfielder for the New York Yankees, and currently works as a firefighter in Gilbert, Ariz., and he would make arrangements with his work schedule to be able to make it to the Derby. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts has mentioned he has no objection to Bellinger competing in the event, which is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. PT July 10 on ESPN.

Bellinger, who was called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City on April 25, has a National League-leading 24 home runs. He is the first Dodgers rookie to record six multihomer games and needs one more multihomer game to tie the MLB rookie record Mark McGwire set with the A's in 1987.

The two-time NL Player of the Week also has a team-leading 13 home runs in June and leads the team with 56 RBIs.

Bellinger would be the third player to commit to the event. Marlins slugger and 2016 Derby champion Giancarlo Stanton announced on Sunday that he will defend his crown, and on Thursday, the Minnesota Twins announced that Miguel Sano will participate. Official announcements are expected in the next week.
