The College Baseball Foundation Board of Trustees announced Tuesday the selection of two new members -- Dick Runchey and Craig Ramsey. They join Mike Fiore, who was added to the board in August, and Jim Hendry, who was added in January, as the newest CBF board members.
The CBF is the parent organization of the National College Baseball Hall of Fame. The new members join the 13 existing trustees.
"We are excited to have these men join the CBF board," said chairman Randy Robbins. "We've known Dick for several years, and he's already been such a big asset for us, and Craig brings so much board experience that they are both natural fits for our organization. To have added such notable baseball names as Fiore and Hendry at the end of last year brings added depth to our existing board."
Runchey, who won the Hall of Fame's inaugural National Collegiate Umpire Award in 2011, worked as a collegiate umpire from 1976 to 1998. In that time, he worked five College World Series and numerous international competitions, including the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. He also has worked as a regional umpire evaluator and is the executive director of Amateur Baseball Umpires' Association. He splits his time between Michigan and Florida.
Ramsey, of Atlanta, Georgia, recently retired after 33 years with Accenture, including 10 years at the helm of the company's Atlanta office, one of the largest in the world. He has been involved with the United Way of Greater Atlanta, the Atlanta Athletic Club and the Florida State University College of Business Board of Governors, among others. A captain on Florida State's 1980 College World Series Team, he was a four-year letterman for the Seminoles under the direction of College Baseball Hall of Famer Dick Howser, NCAA Division I all-time coaching wins leader Mike Martin and former MLB general manager Woody Woodward. Ramsey's son, James, also starred collegiately at Florida State, where he was the American Baseball Coaches Association Co-Player of the Year, the ACC Player of the Year and a unanimous first-team All-American in 2012.
Fiore is the first National College Baseball Hall of Famer to serve on the CBF board. He was inducted in 2014 for his stellar career at the University of Miami, where he played for 2006 inductee Ron Fraser. He played for the Hurricanes from 1985 to 1988 and set 12 school records during his career, including hits (341), doubles (63) and RBI (235). He went to the College World Series each of his four years and won a National Championship in 1985. Today, he serves as Vice President at Boras Corporation, one of the leading sports agency companies in the world.
Hendry has been a name in baseball circles for many years. He served as the head coach at Creighton University from 1984 to 1991. He led the team to the College World Series in 1991 and was named National Coach of the Year. Following that season, he accepted a position with the Florida Marlins. He became general manager of the Chicago Cubs in 2002, a position he held until 2011. In 2012, he joined the New York Yankees as a special assistant to GM Brian Cashman.
"All of these men bring a tremendous amount of experience to our already wonderful board," Robbins said. "They also give us added geographic diversity, which allows us to better spread the message of the National College Baseball Hall of Fame and its work to protect the history and future of college baseball."
