Development to begin on outdoor plaza in '18

Gathering area will be across from Coors Field

December 1st, 2017

DENVER -- The West Lot at 19th and Wazee streets in Denver across from Coors Field will be transformed into an area that will include an outdoor gathering plaza, plus hospitality, residential, retail, entertainment and food-and-beverage spaces. The development will be highlighted by a Colorado Rockies Hall of Fame.
Renderings for the project were showcased Friday by Colorado-based architectural design firm Stantec.
The outdoor "content plaza" will be the first of its kind in Denver, according to the announcement from Stantec. Construction of the area, which will span an entire city block, is scheduled to begin in 2018.
"The plaza is designed as a pre and postgame gathering place for Rockies fans, complete with unique restaurants and state-of-the-art audio and visual systems," Larry Weeks, principal at Stantec, said in the press release.

The area is the last open land parcel connected to Denver's Lower Downtown (LoDo), Union Station and the River North (RiNo) Art District, so the development will be a critical connection point. Such a development will be keeping with a trend of mixed-use developments within stadium and arena districts across North America. Stantec is also providing design support in cities such as Dallas, Tampa, Chicago and Edmonton.
While games and the Rockies Hall of Fame will be major attractions, the area will be in use even outside the baseball season.
"Beyond baseball, the plaza will serve as Denver's 'outdoor room,' a year-round space that can accommodate neighborhood concerts, festivals and other activities," said Daniel Aizenman, senior principal at Stantec, according to the release.

As part of a $200 million agreement for the team to play in Coors Field for the next 30 years, the Rockies secured a 99-year lease for the lot, which is owned by the Metropolitan Major League Baseball Stadium District, which is a division of the state of Colorado.
"We're incredibly proud to help realize the vision long held by the Rockies," John Yonushewski, Stantec buildings senior principal, said in the announcement. "This development will be an urban jewel for downtown Denver and provide a much-needed public amenity for families and the neighborhood. Our team is inspired to design such an epicenter for excitement."
