CHICAGO -- Kris Bryant was the Cubs' designated hitter on Tuesday, although he wasn't exactly sure what to do.
"We don't DH a lot, so we don't have anybody to ask about it," Bryant said. "We'll see. Maybe I'll be good at it."
Bryant ending up going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts against James Shields in the Cubs' 3-0 loss to the White Sox.
The move gave Bryant a chance to get off his feet a little. He also had a slight headache from a collision at second base in the ninth inning Monday night after trying to stretch his hit from a single to a double.
"It's always my instincts to slide head first on something like that, but I need to slide feet first," Bryant said. "I just feel like when I'm runing top speed, I'm quicker getting to the bag sliding head first. The throw took the second baseman back toward me, which didn't help me out much."
Bryant isn't sure what he hit in the collision at second. He didn't feel woozy, but he did take his time walking off the field to make sure everything was OK.
"Anything with the head is serious," he said. "I was fortunate it wasn't serious. After that, I felt fine. In the bottom of the ninth, I felt fine, and the adrenaline started pumping."

"There's a part of him that it bothers a little bit, and it should," Maddon said. "It absolutely should bother him. But if you're truly a pro, if you're going to bring somebody in who you know is the elite of the elite and he's at your position, it's a little bit easier to take that step back and be more absorbed in the team concept.
"I give Hector all the credit in the world for understanding that. [Adding Chapman] makes [Pedro] Strop better, it makes [Carl Edwards Jr.] better, it makes Travis [Wood] better. It makes everybody better, because he's at the end. Give Hector a lot of credit. He could not have reacted any better than he did."

• Jorge Soler, rehabbing from a left hamstring strain, is continuing to make progress. Soler is 2-for-13 in his Minor League rehab assignment at Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa. Maddon said they want the outfielder to get at least nine or 10 more at-bats so he can work on his timing at the plate.
• Clayton Richard was designated for assignment to make room on the roster for Chapman. Richard was 0-1 with one save and a 6.43 ERA in 25 appearances for the Cubs.
