PITTSBURGH -- Cubs outfielder Matt Szczur strained his right hamstring during a double-steal attempt in Monday's 7-2 win against the Pirates. The injury has landed Szczur on the 15-day disabled list.
David Ross broke for second in the fifth inning of Monday's game and got caught in a rundown, Szczur headed home, but as the throw came in, he stopped and then started again, injuring the hamstring. He scored when Josh Harrison's throw sailed over the catcher's head for an error. Szczur was removed from the game in the bottom of the inning.
"I'm just going to just take it day by day," Szczur said. "I hope to get better every day. It felt better this morning, better than it did yesterday. It was feeling good this morning."
The Cubs called up outfielder Ryan Kalish and transferred Christian Villanueva to the 60-day DL. Kalish was with the Cubs briefly in 2014, hitting .248 in 121 at-bats. He did not play in organized baseball at all in 2015, rehabbing some injuries, and got a late invitation to Spring Training this year. After spring camp he was assigned to Triple-A Iowa, where he was hitting .368 in 70 plate appearances. Kalish appeared as a pinch-hitter on Tuesday, recording a flyout in the Cubs' 7-1 win.
"This is just awesome," Kalish said. "You don't like to see anyone go down around me, but they will be back and it will be all good. It makes me appreciate what I have, because there's a lot of guys out there just trying to be anywhere, and here I am."
