SAN DIEGO -- The D-backs made a pair of roster moves Sunday to bolster their tired bullpen, recalling right-handers Archie Bradley and Evan Marshall, while optioning Jake Barrett and Matt Buschmann to Triple-A Reno.
The already-taxed bullpen combined for 12 innings in Saturday's 14-inning loss to the Padres, as a result of both starter Shelby Miller having to leave the game in the second inning and the game going extra innings.
After Sunday's 7-3 win over the Padres, Chip Hale announced that Bradley -- Arizona's No. 2 prospect, according to MLBPipeline.com -- would start on Monday against the Giants instead of Rubby De La Rosa, who pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief on Saturday night. It was the second time this year he had been used in relief in between his starts.
Telling Buschmann and Barrett that they were being optioned was not easy for D-backs manager Chip Hale, as both pitched well enough to stay.
"I think guys understand, that's the great thing about our ballclub, both [Matt] and Jake understand where we are," Hale said. "They know how the game works, they know they're not available today and we needed bodies."
Marshall was one of the final cuts this spring after pitching well enough to make the team. His return to the big leagues is another step in moving past a tough 2015 behind him when he suffered a near fatal injury. Marshall was struck in the head by a line drive Aug. 3 while pitching for Reno.
"Not making the team is devastating," Marshall said. "But you take a day to get your mind right and then you repurpose yourself and re-motivate yourself and do what you have to do to be the next man up."
Bradley was watching a movie and starting to doze off late Saturday night in his El Paso hotel room when he got a call from farm director Mike Bell informing him of his promotion.
"Obviously it was a welcome phone call, but then kind of went into panic mode trying to pack and figure everything out," said Bradley, who got about three hours sleep. "Happy to be here, though."
