Two miscues in 6th prove costly for D-backs

Owings' error, Peralta losing ball in sun lead to three Rockies runs

May 8th, 2017

DENVER -- Things unraveled for the D-backs defensively in the sixth inning Sunday, leading to a 5-2 loss to the Rockies at Coors Field.
"I think the one inning that made the difference tonight was the inning where we didn't play fundamental baseball," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said of the sixth. "Defensively, I think we've been doing a really good job all year long. That moment right there cost us several unearned runs and we couldn't play catch-up from that point."
Arizona right-hander was pitching well and trailing just 1-0 as the D-backs were very much in the game.
Walker retired the first two hitters of the sixth before hit a grounder that second baseman Chris Owings could not handle for an error.
Owings said after the game that the ball did not take a bad hop, he just misplayed it.

So, instead of the inning being over, stepped to the plate and he lifted a fly ball to right field.
started toward the ball, but he tripped and fell to the ground. He recovered quickly and it appeared he might still be able to catch the ball, but he then lost it in the sun and it fell a few feet away from him.
That allowed Reynolds to come around and score from first, and the Rockies really made it hurt when followed with a two-run homer off reliever to expand the lead to 4-0.
"Somehow, my cleat got stuck and I fell down," Peralta said. "And by that time, I was trying to get up and find the ball, and with the angle I had, the sun was right there."
Peralta had sunglasses, but they were perched on his hat and not his face.
"I had my sunglasses on my hat, but the sun wasn't hitting right," he said. "If I was looking that way [toward home plate], the sun was over there [to the right]. But when I fell down and then started looking at the ball, I was looking straight into the sun."
Peralta said he was upset that his play contributed to Walker getting a loss, as the D-backs wound up scoring a pair of runs in the eighth.
"Things happen," Peralta said. "I was feeling really bad ... really bad for Taijuan for what happened in that inning. It's one of those days. You have to turn the page. We'll get some rest tomorrow and be ready for Detroit."
