Owings tops D-backs' list for '16 rebounds

Tomas, Segura also focus on improvements

February 9th, 2016

PHOENIX -- D-backs pitchers and catchers will have their first Spring Training workout next week, and there is much optimism surrounding a team that has made some significant additions during the offseason.
The moves come on the heels of a season in which the D-backs improved by 15 wins to finish 79-83.

Over the next few days we'll provide a categorical preview of the 2016 D-backs, including an introduction of the new players, a projected lineup and rotation and the top prospects to watch. The series begins with a look at D-backs players on the rebound in 2016.
2B / SS Chris Owings: Last year is one Owings would just as soon forget, as he hit just .227. Look behind the numbers, though, and you'll find that Owings was still recovering from offseason left shoulder surgery, and as a result was forced to change his mechanics at the plate. Now that he's fully healthy, the team is counting on a bounceback season from Owings.

OF Yasmany Tomas: It's not necessarily accurate to say Tomas is rebounding, because 2015 was his first year playing baseball in the United States. Signed out of Cuba, Tomas produced decent numbers, but the expectations for him were higher. The D-backs are hoping a full offseason of conditioning, plus a year's worth of experience under his belt, will help Tomas reach the potential they saw when they signed him.

INF Jean Segura: The D-backs acquired Segura with the belief he will recapture the form he showed when he was an All-Star for the Brewers in 2013. He will compete along with Owings and Nick Ahmed for the shortstop/second base jobs.
