D-backs trying to help Shelby solve scuffles

May 4th, 2016

MIAMI -- Shelby Miller is still looking for his first win as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Maybe it'll happen on a familiar mound in Atlanta. That's where the 2015 All-Star makes his next start on Saturday.
Still searching for answers in 2016, Miller is 0-3 with an 8.49 ERA. He hasn't worked past five innings since his first outing of the season, a six-inning stint.
"I think the key is what can we do to help him," said manager Chip Hale. "We've seen him pitch and throw the ball really well at times. It's just maintaining that, staying away from negativity. His next start is in Atlanta on a mound he's used to throwing on, which should help him. He has a great attitude."

Miller came over to the D-backs, along with Gabe Speier, in a December trade with the Braves for former top Arizona prospect Dansby Swanson, Ender Inciarte and Aaron Blair.
Hale said pitching coach Mike Butcher is reaching way back into Miller's past in trying to come up with answers to the slow start.
"Mike has gone back to when [Miller] was at [Class] A ball, looking at video to see if there was anything that could help him," Hale said. "Just something ... if there's something, the way you set up or the way your feet are -- anything that could help him."
With each tough outing, the pressure continues to mount.
"I think that anytime you struggle, it's partially physical but a lot of it is mental," Hale said. "That's just part of life and what we deal with as athletes.
"But I think it's just a matter of having some success and feeling good about it. He's had innings where it's been great. Just have to keep stringing those together, and when trouble does hit, be able to get through it one time and I think he'll be fine."
