Greinke honored for glovework

D-backs ace was named the Wilson Defensive Player of the Year for the pitcher position on Friday night.
The designation for Greinke -- the first Defensive Player Award of his career -- comes on the heels of winning his third consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove Award on Tuesday after the conclusion of his 13th Major League season.
The Wilson Award was the second in a series of three major defensive awards given out this offseason; the upcoming Esurance MLB Awards feature two defensive categories -- Best Defensive Player and Best Defensive Play.

Greinke, who turned 33 in October, tallied seven defensive runs saved in his first season with the D-backs -- tied for the second-most in the Major Leagues behind , who finished with eight. Greinke also won the 2009 American League Cy Young Award with Kansas City and the 2013 NL Silver Slugger Award as a member of the Dodgers.
The Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Awards, established in 2012, evaluates its nine position player honorees and team champion based upon scouting information, sabermetric analysis and basic fielding statistics.
Boston right fielder also won the Wilson award for best overall defensive player, and the San Francisco Giants won the Wilson award for best overall defensive team in 2016.
