DETROIT -- Tigers radio play-by-play broadcaster Dan Dickerson has been honored with the prestigious award that bears the name of his predecessor and mentor. The Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association presented Dickerson with the Ernie Harwell Lifetime Achievement Award.
The award was presented last week during the DSBA's annual Christmas celebration. Dickerson is the fourth Tigers broadcaster to receive the award, joining Harwell, Paul Carey and Ray Lane. Other previous winners include John Fountain and Jonathan Yinger.
Dickerson just completed his 14th season as the voice of the Tigers on radio. He spent his first three seasons working in the booth with Harwell, sharing play-by-play duties, before taking over the lead upon Harwell's retirement after the 2002 season. He added television play-by-play calls on 13 Fox Sports Detroit telecasts this past season, and has co-hosted a weekly Hot Stove talk show on Tigers offseason topics for several years.
Dickerson has long been a fixture on the Detroit sports scene, calling the MHSAA high school football championships and Big Ten hockey games on Fox Sports Detroit as well as University of Detroit Mercy basketball games on radio. His Detroit sportscasting career began at WWJ Radio, where he was a postgame host on Lions broadcasts and sideline reporters on University of Michigan football.
The award joins an expansive trophy case in Dickerson's career. He's a three-time winner of the Michigan Sportscaster of the Year award from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, and won the Ty Tyson Excellence in Sports Broadcasting Award from the DSBA in 2008.
