Straily eyes turnaround, O's weigh options

Hyde on righty starter: 'We’d like to see Dan get back on track'

CLEVELAND -- To say things haven’t gone the way would have hoped since joining the Orioles in early April borders on extreme understatement territory. That said, his strong desire to see his season turned around certainly hasn’t manifested in the type of production typically associated with the veteran starting pitcher.

Following another rough outing -- the latest coming in a 14-7 loss on Thursday night in Cleveland -- the Orioles are beginning to ponder the best way to get the 30-year-old hurler back on track. Given Straily's 8.51 ERA through his first 30 2/3 innings this season, the Orioles have started to look at all of their options moving forward.

“We’re considering a bunch of things,” manager Brandon Hyde said when asked if the club had considered removing Straily from the rotation or placing him in the bullpen. “Obviously, we’d like to see Dan get back on track. He’s not had the success he’s wanted to have.”

Straily was charged with four runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings on Thursday, an outing which was cut short by Hyde’s decision to turn to the bullpen in hopes of maintaining an early lead. The abbreviated start marked the fifth time in seven starts this season in which Straily has failed to make it through five innings.

Unfortunately, things aren’t trending any better recently for Straily, who has given up 15 runs over his past three starts, yielding 20 hits and three homers over those 12 innings, walking seven and striking out seven.

Straily has also seen a decrease in strikeout percentage, a five percent climb in hard-hit percentage from last season, and his expected weighted-on base average, a Statcast metric which accounts for quality and frequency of opposing contact, current resides among the bottom-four percent of the league.

Adding to the frustration, Straily, who owns a career 4.40 ERA over eight big-league seasons, feels like there has been a different theme to each start, leading to his struggles and making it difficult to pinpoint a solution.

“I need to get better at getting ahead of guys and getting deeper in ballgames for our team,” Straily said following his latest start. “It’s been something different each game. [Thursday], I was still pretty convinced we picked a guy off second base based on what I saw. He ended up scoring. Ground ball to second base. He beats it out. He ends up scoring.

"It’s just little things like that that are coming back to bite us. It’s really just, the last couple of starts, I feel like it’s something like that each time out for me.”

Whether those recent trends result in a shift to the bullpen, a move in a different direction in the rotation or a preservation of the status quo is currently still left to speculation. But based on Hyde’s comments, it does appear Straily’s slot isn’t fully guaranteed for the time being.

“We’re going to consider a lot of things right now over the course of this year with a lot of guys,” Hyde said. “This is like the land of opportunity. You’re going to get opportunity here. We’re looking for guys to make the most of it. In Dan’s case, I think we’re going to explore all options.”
