BALTIMORE -- The Blue Jays placed infielder on the family medical emergency list before Wednesday's 5-3 win and recalled from Triple-A Buffalo. Additionally, they optioned reliever to the Bisons to make room for Wednesday's starter, , who was officially recalled from Class A Advanced Dunedin. Sanchez allowed one unearned run over six innings.
Sanchez had been optioned to keep his innings down, not pitching in a live game during his 10 days away from the club. As Toronto continues to monitor his workload, manager John Gibbons said he won't be moved to the bullpen. Sanchez will remain a starter for as long as the Blue Jays feel comfortable having him pitch.
"I'm not sure when it will end," Gibbons said of a potential shutdown date. "We are going to try to figure all that out as we go along."
Pitching coach Pete Walker said the Blue Jays will stick with a six-man rotation for now.
"Obviously things can change, but right now we'll keep it the same," Walker said.
Gibbons isn't sure how long Barney will be away from the club, but with September callups beginning Thursday, the Blue Jays won't need to send down Goins when Barney returns.
In 63 games for Toronto this season, Goins is batting .186 with three homers and 12 RBIs. He was optioned to the Bisons on Thursday. Barney is hitting .271 in 90 games with the Blue Jays this season.
Schultz will need to wait until the Bisons' season ends Monday to return to the Blue Jays because he was just optioned.
