MIAMI -- Before formally becoming Marlins chief executive officer on Tuesday, Derek Jeter had already reached out to four of the most popular figures in the history of the franchise.
Jack McKeon, Andre Dawson, Tony Perez and Jeff Conine each spoke with Jeter about remaining with the Marlins. Under previous owner Jeffrey Loria, they all held special assistant titles.

Whether their roles and titles will remain as before has yet to be determined. The new ownership team is evaluating all areas of the organization, and the process will take time.
In the final week of the regular season, former team president David Samson -- under the directive of Jeter -- was asked to call each of the four special assistants to inform them they would not be renewed. However, that didn't mean they would not be invited back -- just perhaps in a different capacity.

Perez and Dawson, two Hall of Fame players, and Conine each held titles of special assistants to the president.
McKeon, the manager of Miami's 2003 World Series championship team, was a special assistant to the owner.
Each spent frequent time around the club and represented the organization in the community and at such events like the annual MLB Draft. Conine, part of the Marlins' two World Series title teams, and Perez were selected as ambassadors for the 2017 All-Star Game, played at Marlins Park.
All four were at Marlins Park during the final weekend of the regular season, and Jeter attended a game as well.

Jeter and Bruce Sherman, the Marlins' new chairman and principal owner, were introduced in their roles on Tuesday, and they are in the process of evaluating every department in the organization.
There are still a number of front-office openings to be filled.
Gary Denbo, the Yankees' vice president of baseball development, is likely to be a candidate. Denbo is under contract with the Yankees through the end of the month, and New York is in the postseason.
