SAN DIEGO -- In a rarity for the Padres and Petco Park, Sunday's series finale against the Dodgers was postponed due to rain and possible thunder and lightning. The game will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Sept. 2 at 12:40 p.m. PT.
It is the first rainout in San Diego since July 19, 2015, and only the third in Petco Park history. The first rainout was April 4, 2006 -- after a span of 820 games played without postponement due to weather.
The team announced the game was postponed at around 11 a.m. The tarp had been on the field since the conclusion of Saturday night's game. While it was not raining at the time of the announcement, forecasts called for heavy rain and lightning near the originally scheduled game time.
Tickets for Sunday's game can be used at the first game of the doubleheader on Sept. 2. The start time for the second game has been moved from 5:40 p.m. to 7:10 p.m.
