LOS ANGELES -- Longtime Dodgers scout Glen Van Proyen died last week in Chicago. He was 86 and had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease.
Van Proyen signed three All-Stars -- outfielders Mike Marshall and Ron Kittle and catcher Darrin Fletcher -- as well as reliever Matt Herges in a career that spanned five decades.
Van Proyen was a Minor League pitcher before becoming a high school coach, which led to a scouting career that included 35 years with the Dodgers and concluded with the Cubs before his retirement.
Van Proyen moonlighted as a basketball referee and was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame.
As noted in an obituary by Dodgers Insider, Van Proyen also taught driver's education in high school. One of his students was Hillary Clinton, who wrote his wife a letter of support this summer when word of Van Proyen's condition surfaced.
