PHOENIX -- Injured Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager is not expected to return to Cactus League action this week, manager Dave Roberts said on Monday.
Seager's oblique strain is lingering, although Roberts said he continues to improve. Roberts said he is not yet concerned about Seager's availability for Opening Day, even though Seager has played in only three Spring Training games.
"Corey is still getting better but not really doing baseball specific stuff," said Roberts. "I keep hearing there's improvement, but not enough to get on the field yet. You'd like him and [second baseman] John Forsythe to get time on the infield, but I'm not too concerned about the at-bats."
Seager said he has "progressed every day and not had any setbacks." He has not participated in outdoor drills in 10 days, but he suited up for the first time on Monday and stood at the plate with a bat on his shoulders as Brandon McCarthy threw a bullpen session.
"I went outside today in pants and cleats for the first time and that was fun," he said. "I don't know what the next step is. All I've heard is that these can linger. It's one of those things where if it takes a few more days, take the few more days."
Seager said if he's able to get enough Minor League at-bats, as he did last Spring healing from a twisted knee, he'll be ready for Opening Day.
Outfielder Andre Ethier also remains sidelined by hip tightness, but he has been working out with the team and Roberts said he is expected to play in games later this week.
Pitcher Scott Kazmir was scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Monday, after which it will be decided when he pitches next. He has dealt with a combination of hip and mechanical issues all spring.
Roberts said he expects the Team Mexico Dodgers -- Adrian Gonzalez, Sergio Romo and Alex Verdugo -- to return to camp in the next couple of days.
